The 2008 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is incredibly fine in this vintage, probably because of the addition of a new Riserva from this vineyard into the lineup. Dark red fruit, flowers, mint and spices flow from this graceful, refined Barolo. It will be interesting to see where the 2008 goes from here. I can’t say the 2008 is a very typical Bric del Fiasc because it is more finesse than power, but it is a very beautiful wine just the same. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033. There is always something new happening at Scavino, where Enrico Scavino, along with his daughters Enrica and Elisa, continues to push the envelope. This year the Scavinos have a new Riserva they are issuing to mark the 30th Anniversary of Bric del Fiasc, first released in 1978. The 2009s, 2010s and 2011s I tasted point to an estate working at a very high level of overall quality and consistency. (the 30th anniversary for this cru, which was bottled on its own beginning in 1978; Scavino will offer just over 200 cases, plus a few magnums; bottled with the estate's old gold label): Good deep, youthful red. Deep, pure, almost shockingly primary aromas of black cherry and espresso. At once silky and vinous, saturating the entire palate under a wave of red fruits and smoky minerality. Wonderfully plush and sweet but powerful too, finishing with noble tannins and sexy building length. Impeccable balance gives this wine an almost magical light touch. This slowly evolving wine should gain in complexity for two decades or more. A small quantity of grapes were fermented in a special vertical tank; the fermentation lasted a week and Scavino used a submerged cap for another four or five days of maceration.

Good deep red. Tight, pure aromas of dark berries, minerals and black pepper, with hints of licorice and bitter chocolate emerging with air (Elisa describes the nose as more conservative, more shy, more Piemontese than the Cannubi). Then very rich and classic in the mouth, with excellent precision to the black cherry and menthol flavors. Still rather inexpressive in the middle palate but explosive on the back end, finishing with outstanding juicy energy, serious but suave tannins and superb subtle persistence. A great showing, but this really calls for six to eight years of cellaring.

Gorgeous nose of rose petals and berries with hints of perfume. Full body, with super fine tannins and a beautiful finish. It’s all about the aromas here. Better in 2014.

About the Producer
Paolo Scavino is an estate in Barolo known for its polished, elegant red wines from the Nebbiolo grape variety. The estate owns 23 hectares (57 acres) entirely within Barolo with parcels in 19 different cru vineyards in all but three of the Barolo communes. The range of nine Barolo wines is led by the Bric Dël Fiasc (from the Fiasco cru in Castiglione Falletto, and produced in both standard and Riserva bottlings), the Cannubi, and the Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata which is aged for an additional year both in large casks and in bottle, and is sourced from a cru vineyard in La Morra. The portfolio of red wines also includes a Langhe Nebbiolo, two Barbera d'Alba wines, a Dolcetto d'Alba, and a Vino Rosso blended from the younger vines grown on the estate. The Langhe Sorriso is Paulo Scavino's key white wine made from Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. The company was founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falleto by Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. Enrico Scavino has been working in the winery since the age of ten, beginning in 1951. He now runs his estate with his daughters, who are the fourth generation.
