The Maucaillou 2010 has fleshy ripe redcurrant and fresh strawberry fruit on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, sagging a little in the middle but finishing with delineation in a Graves-like manner. Tasted January 2014.

The 2010's deep plum/ruby color is accompanied by a subtle note of minerality intermixed with fresh acids, sweet tannin and excellent concentration, suggesting this wine should drink nicely for 10-12 years.

Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois primeur tasting. This has good intensity on the nose with blackberry, oyster shell and dark plum, showing nice poise and focus. The palate is medium-bodied, slightly chewy on the entry, good weight with a firm masculine, cedar-infused finish. Fine.

I cannot quite get my head around the Maucaillou. The aromatics feel a bit muddled, a little green whilst the palate has an attractive saline edge, but looses a little vigour towards the finish. Perhaps it is showing during an awkward stage after bottling? Tasted November 2012.

A Burgundian style of wine with notes of sweet and sour cherries, pomegranates, spice box and damp earth, this medium-bodied, pleasant wine should be drunk over the next 5-6 years.

Ripe plums and berries with hints of flower. Full body, chewy tannins and a long finish. Needs time to soften but beautiful. Better in 2015.
About the Producer
Mocalo Winery currently has 87 hectares of vineyards, of which 51% is used for Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, 42% is used for Merlot grapes, and 7 % of the land is used for the cultivation of Petit Verdot grapes. The average age of all these vines is 25 years. When the grapes reach the ideal ripeness, the winery will pick them by machine. After picking, the grapes are sieved, peeled, and then vinified in the traditional way. The resulting wine is then aged for 14 to 16 months in 30% to 40% new French oak barrels before being bottled in the winery. Mocalo winery produces two types of wines, namely Numero 2 de Maucaillou, dry red wine, and the current annual average output is 300,000 bottles. The wines are usually luxurious in colour, with rich fruit aromas with subtle tannins and a long aftertaste.
