Tasting notes

The Château Maucaillou 2014 has a classic-styled nose with graphite and tobacco infused black fruit that is very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded blackberry and boysenberry scents, crisp acidity with a pleasant touch of spice on the finish. This is a very harmonious Maucaillou with pedigree and class - I look forward to re-tasting this in bottle.

The 2014 Maucaillou put in a good performance when I tasted it from barrel. Now in bottle, it builds on that promise with a fresh and vital bouquet: blackberry, tobacco and graphite to the fore, vibrant and engaging. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp and lively entry, well-judged acidity and fine tannin. It is not a dense wine, not a Moulis of immense body, but it has great length and real finesse. This comes recommended.

The 2014 Maucaillou has turned out nicely. There is good purity and freshness to the fruit. Sadly, the new oak has not integrated, so readers will have to accept that small flaw. Regardless, this is a very pretty wine with plenty of bright red stone fruit, floral overtones and silky tannins.

Very pretty ripe-strawberry and plum character. Floral, too. Medium to full body, velvety tannins and a savory finish. Classy. Best ever? Better in 2021.

About the Producer

Mocalo Winery currently has 87 hectares of vineyards, of which 51% is used for Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, 42% is used for Merlot grapes, and 7 % of the land is used for the cultivation of Petit Verdot grapes. The average age of all these vines is 25 years. When the grapes reach the ideal ripeness, the winery will pick them by machine. After picking, the grapes are sieved, peeled, and then vinified in the traditional way. The resulting wine is then aged for 14 to 16 months in 30% to 40% new French oak barrels before being bottled in the winery. Mocalo winery produces two types of wines, namely Numero 2 de Maucaillou, dry red wine, and the current annual average output is 300,000 bottles. The wines are usually luxurious in colour, with rich fruit aromas with subtle tannins and a long aftertaste.
