Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Maucaillou opens with notes of Bing cherries, ripe raspberries and boysenberries with suggestions of dried Mediterranean herbs, wild mushrooms and dusty soil. The medium-bodied palate has plenty of red fruit and herbal sparks on offer with a chewy texture and crisp backbone, finishing a little firm and green.

The 2020 Maucaillou never really clicks out of first gear on the nose despite aeration, a bit dusty and needing more vim. The palate is simple, smooth and pastille-like, but lacks real complexity and there's very little grip on the finish. Early-drinking. Tasted twice.

This has aromas of plums, balsamic, currants and paprika. Medium-bodied, fresh and bright with sinewy tannins and a savory, salty finish. Balanced. Drink from 2023.
About the Producer
Mocalo Winery currently has 87 hectares of vineyards, of which 51% is used for Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, 42% is used for Merlot grapes, and 7 % of the land is used for the cultivation of Petit Verdot grapes. The average age of all these vines is 25 years. When the grapes reach the ideal ripeness, the winery will pick them by machine. After picking, the grapes are sieved, peeled, and then vinified in the traditional way. The resulting wine is then aged for 14 to 16 months in 30% to 40% new French oak barrels before being bottled in the winery. Mocalo winery produces two types of wines, namely Numero 2 de Maucaillou, dry red wine, and the current annual average output is 300,000 bottles. The wines are usually luxurious in colour, with rich fruit aromas with subtle tannins and a long aftertaste.
