Description
To open a bottle, is to unleash a liquid kaleidoscope. A rare combination of sumptuous opulence and polished elegance. As a tribute to its rugged force, its softness, and the debt it owes to the soil from which it rises, Masseto was named after the rock-hard clusters of blue clay called ‘massi’ that form on the vineyard’s surface.

The 2007 Masseto is totally different in style. Here the fruit is sweet, seamless and totally inviting, in a style that is immensely pleasing today without sacrificing potential longevity. Floral notes wrap around the generous, insistent finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027.

The estate’s 2007 Masseto is fabulous. Loads of black cherry, blackberry and cassis are intermingled with minerals, violets and French oak. This is an especially sensual Masseto that impresses for its clarity, intensity and length. The wine’s pedigree is impossible to miss, in fact in one of my blind tastings it was immediately identifiable; the class and sheer personality of Masseto came through in spades. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. Importer: Folio Fine Wine Partners, Napa, CA; tel. (707) 256-2700

Rich, sumptuous and exotically beautiful, the 2007 Masseto is off the charts. The year got off to a very warm, dry start, but then cooler weather in August allowed for the vines to find their balance. All the best elements of Masseto and the house style come together in this truly memorable wine. Dark red fruit, espresso, mocha and wild flowers flesh out in a resonant, stunningly beautiful Tuscan red that hits all the right notes. Wow!

(15% alcohol) Dark ruby. Subdued but pure aromas of blackcurrant, coffee and vanilla on the atypically restrained nose. Enters broad and plump, then shows a distinctly restrained sweetness to its blackberry, blueberry and coffee flavors. Finishes ultra-smooth and refined. Though I like this rather politely styled, adult version of Masseto, those who yearn for the explosive aromas and flavors more typically associated with this normally flamboyant wine may be disappointed. I would caution readers to beware of those who score Masseto higher than Ornellaia this year; in '07, as in '02 and '03, Ornellaia is the better wine.

Wow! Licorice, dried violets, blackberries, blueberries, and a touch of cedar on the nose. Full bodied and firm with a tight and refined fruit character. The nose is unbelievable, but the palate is holding back. This has everything, but it needs time to really come together. Please don't touch this until at least 2015. Find the wine
About the Producer
For 700 years the Frescobaldi family has combined tradition, experience and innovation with creativity and the pursuit of excellence. The family has always looked to develop and celebrate the diversity of Tuscany’s terroir, being proud owners of some of the greatest vineyards in this region. The Masseto hill is a special place, both a revelation and a mystery. This is where terroir victoriously transcends the grape varieties and where the blue clays of the Pliocene Era tell their ancient story. Millions of years ago a deep marine substrate was deposited which transformed gradually into blue clay that came to the surface on this hill after thousands of years of erosion. The shells and fossils found imbedded in the clays are testimony to this. With a heart as hard as stone and yet with an intriguing fragility, the clay knows just how to adjust to its environment & climate. This contrast is reflected in the intense power and silky elegance to be found in Masseto.
