Description

To open a bottle, is to unleash a liquid kaleidoscope. A rare combination of sumptuous opulence and polished elegance. As a tribute to its rugged force, its softness, and the debt it owes to the soil from which it rises, Masseto was named after the rock-hard clusters of blue clay called ‘massi’ that form on the vineyard’s surface.

Tasting notes

The rich 1994 Masseto is a Merlot-dominated cuvee with lavish quantities of spicy new oak. In addition to the obvious pain grille notes, the Masseto exhibits less evolution than the 1995 Ornellaia. This full-bodied, spicy, rich wine cuts a broad swath on the palate. It requires another 12-18 months of bottle age, after which it should continue to improve for a decade. It will last for 15 or more years. The "other" Antinori continues to turn out stunning wines from this small estate in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast. The omnipresent Michel Rolland is the consultant, and that is evident in the rich texture, and ripe, concentrated style of this wine. Importer: Kobrand Corp., New York, NY; tel. (212) 490-9300

The 1994 Masseto is another super-impressive wine in this tasting. The warmth of the year comes through in the super-ripe, dense fruit. There is plenty of underlying structure to ensure another decade of very fine drinking here. This is a stunning Masseto from a long forgotten year. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021.

This wine shows its wonderful pure merlot character with olives, blackberries and balsamic character. Full-bodied with velvety tannins and a savory finish.

I like this a little more than the 1993 now. It's a little lean, illustrating the rains during the harvest in 1994, but it shows a pretty berry and blackberry character with just the right amount of tobacco. It's refined and beautifully textured with a delicious finish. Drink now.

About the Producer

For 700 years the Frescobaldi family has combined tradition, experience and innovation with creativity and the pursuit of excellence. The family has always looked to develop and celebrate the diversity of Tuscany’s terroir, being proud owners of some of the greatest vineyards in this region. The Masseto hill is a special place, both a revelation and a mystery. This is where terroir victoriously transcends the grape varieties and where the blue clays of the Pliocene Era tell their ancient story. Millions of years ago a deep marine substrate was deposited which transformed gradually into blue clay that came to the surface on this hill after thousands of years of erosion. The shells and fossils found imbedded in the clays are testimony to this. With a heart as hard as stone and yet with an intriguing fragility, the clay knows just how to adjust to its environment & climate. This contrast is reflected in the intense power and silky elegance to be found in Masseto.
