Tasting notes

Incorporating fully 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Ferrière offers up notes of blackberries, licorice and loamy soil, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and rather layered, muscular palate built around powdery tannins and lively acids. Still primary and unevolved, this is a promising effort that should continue to improve with élevage.

Offering up notes of cherries, dark berries, charcoal and petroleum jelly, the 2021 Ferrière is medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with an impressively round, generous profile for the vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon represents an unusually high proportion (81%) of the blend.

The 2021 Ferrière is a very shy, reticent wine. It has good depth, but all its energy is presently directed inward. Blue fruit, gravel, spice, menthol, licorice and mocha open with a bit of coaxing, but the 2021 needs time. Cabernet Sauvignon is elevated in this year's blend, and it shows in the wine's flavor profile and overall feel. Yields were just 24 hectoliters-per-hectare.

Vibrant and creamy with bright plum, lavender and wet-soil notes. Medium body. Layers of juicy, fleshy tannins spread across the palate. Lots of brightness. 81% cabernet sauvignon, 13% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 1% cabernet franc. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification.

This is very classy and refined, with hints of sandalwood, blackcurrant and mineral aromas and flavors. Medium body. Crunchy and delicious. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Delicious now but better in a year or two.

About the Producer

Located in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, France, Chateau Ferriere is rated as a third growth in the Bordeaux 1855 classification. The vineyards of Château Férier cover 20 hectares, located between the Atlantic Ocean and the wide mouth of the Gironde, in a mild and humid climate. The soil is well-drained gravelly and poor, which allows the vines to root downwards, thus producing a more concentrated wine grape. The vineyard is currently planted with 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Chateau Ferriere, Margaux, France is the main wine of the estate, made from organically grown grapes, with aromas of blackberry and graphite, richness, freshness and vibrancy. In addition, the estate produces two secondary wines, La Dame de Ferriere (Margaux, France) and Les Remparts de Ferriere (Margaux, France), which are made from younger grapes harvested from the vineyard. These two wines are made from young grapes harvested from the vineyard, with an elegant bouquet of fruit and a balanced palate.
