Tasting notes

The 2014 Ferrière offers good up-front intensity and depth, with plenty of dark red cherry, smoke, tobacco, game and underbrush notes. Pliant but also a touch rustic in its tannins, the 2014 will drink well for at least a few years.

The 2014 Ferrière has a backward bouquet with brambly black fruit, graphite, pressed violets and cedar aromas that gather pace with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. It just feels a little muddled on the finish compared to its peers. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The Château Ferrière 2014 has a lovely nose that is punchy and bright: violet-tinged black fruit that are vivacious and precise. The palate is medium-bodied with a citrus fresh entry, a keen thread of acidity, good weight in the mouth with a surprisingly (for Ferrière) structured finish. There is a sense of energy here that wins you over and it should be translated into the wine post-bottling. One not to overlook as this is often keenly priced compared to its peers.

The 2014 Ferrière has a floral nose: wilted rose petals and a touch of Asian spice complementing the slightly muted black fruit. The palate is smooth and caressing on the entry with well-judged acidity, though it needed more substance and a touch more grip on the finish. This will probably be one of the earlier-drinking 2014 Margaux, but it will give pleasure over the next ten years, possibly more.

The 2014 Ferrière has a perfumed nose with violet-tinged red fruit, incense and earthy tones. There might just be a touch of TCA here. The palate is definitely corked. Tasted non-blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Who says that Margaux has to be a “feminine” wine? This has intense red currant and delicate savory notes on the nose, but on the palate it’s a tight, firm wine that has some real power and excellent aging potential. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try drinking in 2020.

About the Producer

Located in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, France, Chateau Ferriere is rated as a third growth in the Bordeaux 1855 classification. The vineyards of Château Férier cover 20 hectares, located between the Atlantic Ocean and the wide mouth of the Gironde, in a mild and humid climate. The soil is well-drained gravelly and poor, which allows the vines to root downwards, thus producing a more concentrated wine grape. The vineyard is currently planted with 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Chateau Ferriere, Margaux, France is the main wine of the estate, made from organically grown grapes, with aromas of blackberry and graphite, richness, freshness and vibrancy. In addition, the estate produces two secondary wines, La Dame de Ferriere (Margaux, France) and Les Remparts de Ferriere (Margaux, France), which are made from younger grapes harvested from the vineyard. These two wines are made from young grapes harvested from the vineyard, with an elegant bouquet of fruit and a balanced palate.
