Another superb, multidimensional wine, the 2013 Clos de La Roche boasts remarkable complexity, starting with exquisite aromatics, finely-sculpted fruit and firm yet polished tannins. Layers of flavor flesh out in all directions in a resonant, expansive Burgundy endowed with pure pedigree. There is a lot going on in the glass, although it is the wine's totally sublime sense of harmony that is most captivating at this early stage. I can't wait to taste the 2013 from bottle.

Bright, dark red. Sexy aromas of raspberry, dried rose, meat and musky, truffley underbrush come across as a bit exotic for this bottling. Plush and sweet, with strong mocha and coffee complicating the raspberry and underbrush flavors. No shortage of underlying muscle here. Finishes with substantial ripe, dusty tannins.

Bright, dark red. Ripe, complex aromas of black cherry, dark raspberry, smoke and minerals. Broad and soil-driven, with impressive medicinal reserve to the flavors of black fruits, camphor, spices and crushed stone. Dense, vibrant, saline and deep, finishing dry and backward but with excellent sappy energy. This youthfully tight wine will need at least a decade of cellaring.

The 2013 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru does not quite have the same fruit expression on the nose as the barrel sample of Clos-Saint-Denis '13 tasted alongside. It feels a little more contained at the moment, but it opens with aeration with attractive earthy tones. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity and more salinity toward the finish. There is a fine marine influence here, long and tender, a sophisticated Clos-de-la-Roche considering the growing season, yet maybe without the breadth and ambition of the top wines of the vintage.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, Domaine Dujac's 2013 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a more backward and reticent nose than that of Bichot's, but it is well defined with clever use of stems, wonderful mineralité and poise while translating the essence of the vineyard. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well judged acidity, clean and pure with superb balance on the harmonious finish that has just a little hardness at the moment. It's a proper "sit and wait" Grand Cru, but both the sitting and waiting will be worth it. Tasted September 2016.

A wine that has a lot to say about what it is that constitutes great pinot noir. Ethereal, swirling aromas of expressive red cherries, musky whole bunch notes, blueberries and a spicy edge. The palate delivers pitch-perfect balance with fine yet sturdy tannin definition, bright acidity and a long, fruit-soaked finish. Drink from 2019 to 2030.
About the Producer
Domaine Dujac is managed by the Seysses family. It was founded in 1967 by Jacque Seyesses. At the beginning, Château Dujac had only 4.5 hectares of vineyards in Morey-Saint-Denis. The vineyards were expanded with the purchase of Echezeaux, Bonnes MaresChambertin, Romanee St Vivant and Vosene-Romanee. The estate also owns 1.95 hectares of vineyards in the Clos de la Roche, where the vines are on average 45 to 50 years old. The estate also has 1.45 hectares of vineyards in Clos Saint-Denis, with vines of an average age of 45 to 50 years. In 2005, Château Dujac, together with Chateau de Puligny-Montrachet, acquired Domaine Charles Thomas, acquiring Charles Thomas' shares in the vineyards of Chambertin, Vosne- Romanee and other vineyards. However, the estate sold some of its vineyards after the purchase in order to finance the purchase. However, this acquisition allowed the estate to expand to around 15.5 hectares. Under Jacques' leadership, Château Dujac has developed very well. The grapes were pressed whole and the must was fermented in new oak barrels, and in 1999, when Jacques handed over the running of the estate to his son, the way the estate was made changed dramatically: the grapes were sometimes destemmed and the barrels used for fermentation were probably only 25% new oak. However, the estate's Grand Cru wines are still matured in new oak barrels, while the Grand Cru wines are matured in 60% to 80% new oak barrels. Bottling usually takes place in February or March of the following year. The estate produces around 4,650 bottles/hectare of wine.
