The 2015 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières was a little subdued on the nose when I tasted it from barrel, despite rigorous coaxing. The message on this day was: I'm not coming out to play, at least not today! The palate is more amenable to inspection, well balanced with a fine line of acidity, a touch of spice and nutmeg enlivening the mouth—though to quibble (and I must), it just lacks the same precision on the finish as the Les Perrières or Les Charmes, dips prematurely before the finish line. I wonder whether this was just underperforming on the day, because it is usually one of my favorite releases from Dominique Lafon.

Tasted blind, Lafon's 2015 Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières exhibits a reserved nose of struck match, iodine and citrus oil, followed by a medium to full-bodied, taut but layered palate that's deep, tangy and concentrated but decidedly tight-knit at this stage. Some patience will be required.

(bottled a week before my visit): Discreet, subtly spiced aromas of apple and lime blossom (Lafon noted that a bottle he opened the day before my visit was more reduced). Wonderfully precise, elegant, gingery wine with a lovely combination of energy and richness. This very pure, classic Genevrières boasts considerable early charm but should age very well. Really saturates the palate and dances on the long, scented finish.
