Tasting notes

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Meursault 1er Cru les Genevrières was packed full of sulfur on the nose although behind this lies intense fruit that will blossom with two or three years in bottle (the longer the better). The palate is well balanced with slightly honeyed fruit, a fine thread of acidity and great presence on the finish. You cannot deny the substance and length of this 2014 from Dominique Lafon, a wine with ambition. All this Meursault requires is more time.

The 2014 Meursault 1er Cru les Genevrières has an exquisite bouquet in the making; there is wonderful delineation and focus here, similar to Goutte d'Or, but its squeezing the accelerator a bit harder. The palate is refined on the entry, sweet yellow plum and citrus peel, quite refined, easing down a few gears to a sensual finish. A little racy, a little edgy but with impressive density, this is another superb Genevrières -- a vineyard that excelled in 2014, from a winemaker that often excels himself.

(production was down 40% due to hail): Aromas of lime, quinine and toasted biscuit show an element of noble reduction. Rich and glyceral but with superb acidity energizing the creamy mid-palate and giving the wine a firm spine for aging. This fruit was also picked early, on September 10 and 12. Aging in 20% new oak, but I picked up little obvious woodiness.
