Soft contours and silky fruit give the 2009 Montrachet much of its undeniable appeal. The 2009 has always been radiant, alluring and arrestingly beautiful. Tonight, it is all that, and more. Even with all of its open-knit richness, the 2009 retains terrific freshness as well as nuance. Tasted at the DRC Montrachet charity event in New York.

The 2009 Montrachet from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is pure hedonism. I think I could drink this one wine all night and be perfectly happy. From a warm harvest, the 2009 Montrachet plays off more radiant fruit and silkiness than the more exotic, honeyed notes that are found in years with botrytis. Even so, it is fabulous.

The 2009 Montrachet is equally compelling. Deep, unctuous and layered, the 2009 possesses exceptional balance and overall harmony. Orange jam, spice, wild flowers mint and apricots continue to blossom as the wine opens up in the glass. Despite the warm vintage, the 2009 is not as unabashedly opulent as vintages like 1995 or 2008, where botrytis adds sweetness, oiliness and texture. Instead, the 2009 is a wine from a radiant, warm vintage. That is exactly what comes through here. With each successive tasting, the 2009 continues to become more and more expressive.

A last minute addition, the 2009 Montrachet is an inspired wine to round out the afternoon. Radiant, youthful and racy, the 2009 has a sense of youthful optimism that seems especially appropriate to the occasion.

The 2009 Montrachet is extremely rewarding today, even if it has a long road ahead of it. Apricot jam, honey, wild flowers and mint are all woven together in a powerful, unctuous Montrachet. Even with all of its obvious opulence and ripeness, the 2009 remains exceptional well balanced. The style is open-knit and generous, which is to say very much in the style of the year, with all the elements in the right place. The 2009 is virtually impossible to resist now, but it has at least another two decades of exceptional drinking ahead of it.

The 2009 Montrachet has come together beautifully since I last tasted it from barrel. From barrel the 2009 was super-ripe and almost tropical but it seems to have settled down over the last year. There is still plenty of signature 2009 richness and ripeness, but the wine's minerality is now much more present. A brilliant, textured finish rounds things out in style. Overall, the 2009 is a mid-weight Montrachet. I would love to see it age for several decades, but it takes a pretty courageous soul to age white Burgundy these days.

The 2009 Montrachet Grand Cru is tasted from two bottles that had both come directly from the domaine. There are slight differences between the two, one showing a little more oxidation than the other, though both perfectly drinkable. They are quite lucid and deep in colour. The bouquet has a headiness and opulence that personally does not befit either a Montrachet of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. I cannot help feeling that the hedonistic aspect of this wine feels a bit uncharacteristic. The palate is ripe, slightly viscous and with blurred edges due to the growing season. For me it is missing the nervosité of say, the 2008 from the Domaine tasted a few weeks earlier. That is not to imply that it is not enjoyable. Of course it is! But it just misses the intellect of Montrachet in full flight. Tasted in Paris at the Mandarin Oriental hotel.

A broad, muscular wine, the 2009 Montrachet Grand Cru delivers a rich bouquet of honeyed orchard fruit, tangerine oil, toasted nuts and baking spices. Full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with a concentrated core of fruit and considerable mid-palate weight, it's dramatic and expansive, gaining in vivacity with time in the glass. Surely one of the most powerful white Burgundies produced in this vintage, it is aging with grace and offers compelling drinking today.
