Tasting notes

Tasted next to the 2013, the 2014 Montrachet could not possibly be more different in style. Crushed rocks, white flowers, lime, ginger and mint are some of the many notes that run through a Montrachet built on tension and sizzling energy. Bright and crystalline, with tremendous purity of fruit, the 2014 need at least a few years in bottle to be at its very best. Wow! Tasted at the DRC Montrachet charity event in New York.

Bright yellow-straw. Knockout soil-driven aromas and flavors of crushed rock, menthol, mint, ginger, white flowers, hazelnut and iodiney minerality, with a hint of fresh pear emerging with time in the glass: it would be easier to list what I didn't find in this wine! As tactile as a solid but with extraordinary mineral energy--and a bit of unabsorbed CO2--giving the middle palate astounding lift and a light touch. In a very pure, airy style but with great richness and some very ripe suggestions of marzipan and candied stone fruits. Finishes with outstanding gingery thrust and rising length, and the tannic structure of a red wine. A legend in the making.

The 2014 Montrachet Grand Cru is bright, focused and nicely sculpted. Just starting to drink well, the 2014 is a Montrachet built more on linear energy rather than volume. It's in the sweet spot today, now that it has softened a touch with age. Hints of citrus, white flowers, crushed rocks and slate linger on the delineated, nuanced finish. This was shown at the conclusion of the 2021 vintage presentation.

About the Producer

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or DRC is one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world with 25.5 hectares mostly in Vosne-Romanée on the route des Grands Crus in the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits of the Burgundy vineyards (named after the 1.8 hectare Clos de la Romanée-Conti, one of the most prestigious mythical grands crus in the world). The civil company of the same name was founded in 1942 by Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. It is now co-managed for their heir family by the winegrowers Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal.
