Tasting notes

Tasted blind in Bordeaux (of all places!) At first I was heading for Barolo when invited to guess the identity. Strong earthy scents develop with just a few swirls of the glass, an iron element, something almost Victorian! Very good definition. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and very good structure. Those tertiary notes are very strong, almost belying the fact that this is a Burgundy. Slightly grainy in texture, this is a La Tache brimming with energy. With touches of cold black tea/Earl Grey towards the finish, this is a cerebral wine Tasted April 2011.

The 2000 La Tâche Grand Cru is showing extraordinarily well, and I can only assume that the comparatively parsimonious appreciation it has received from other wine critics is owing to insecurity concerning awarding a high score to a wine from an "off vintage." Soaring from the glass with a deep and complex bouquet of wilted rose petals, sweet wild berry fruit, exotic spices, orange rind and violets, it's full-bodied, sensual and enveloping, with a deep and layered core of fruit, melting tannins, succulent acids and a long, sapid finish. Fully mature, the 2000 is one of the most rewarding recent vintages of La Tâche to drink today.

Slightly paler than Richebourg. A truly astounding nose that just kept changing: red fruits, then a hint of caramel etc...etc... A multi-dimensional palate, very rich with that caramel note popping up again. Very well-knit, rich and complex. On the finish it was giving just a touch of coconut and hazelnuts. A real melting pot of flavours. Exceptional - an exotic, perhaps atypical La Tache. Large production. (2,072 cases produced) Tasted February 2003.

Tasted at the La Tâche vertical at The Square. The La Tâche 2000 has never been reviewed by The Wine Advocate. Despite the challenges of this modest Burgundy season, it should not be overlooked. It clearly has a more mature appearance than the 1999 with wide bricking on the rim. The aromatics are also more advanced with bacon fat and baking powder infusing the red and black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, tart red cherries on the entry and then moving confidently toward secondary notes on the finish–cola, brown spices and sage. There is a lovely purity to this La Tâche that is probably reaching its peak now, but should plateau for 10-15 years.
