Tasting notes

Deeper pitched than the domaine's Corton, the 2019 Échézeaux Grand Cru exhibits aromas of blackberries, plums, exotic spices, orange rind and rose hips. Full-bodied, rich and ample, its broad, textural attack segues into a deep and concentrated mid-palate and a long, saline finish. This is a sensual, enveloping, elegantly muscular Échézeaux that has fulfilled all the promise it showed in barrel.

The 2019 Échézeaux Grand Cru is immensely seductive, bursting from the glass with aromas of cherries, wild berries and plums mingled with notes of hoisin sauce, coniferous forest floor, rich soil tones and exotic spices. Full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a layered, enveloping core, terrific concentration and powdery structuring tannins, this is a rather dramatic, textural Échézeaux from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru is a powerhouse. Dark, rich and explosive, the 2019 packs a huge punch. There is plenty of intensity in the blue/purplish-tinged fruit. The domaine's Echézeaux is often a charmer, but that is not the case here, at least not today. At times, the 2019 feels a bit heavy. It will be interesting to see how it ages.

The 2019 Echézeaux was picked on 22 and 23 of September at 23hL/ha. Conspicuously deeper in colour than the Corton, this has a fuller bouquet with red cherries, raspberry coulis, traces of tobacco and autumn leaves. The palate is quite succulent on the entry, candid red fruit (raspberry and wild strawberry), hints of marmalade and quince. Perhaps it just misses a little persistence on the finish, my inclination that this Echézeaux will drink early, yet has the substance to provide a couple of decades of drinking pleasure. 871 cases produced. Tasted at Corney & Barrow’s annual in bottle tasting in London.

The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru was picked on September 22–23 at 23hl/ha. It has an absolutely divine bouquet of pure black cherry and blueberry scents plus hints of pressed violet and crushed limestone, all displaying wonderful focus. The palate is very spicy with a liberal dose of black pepper on the entry. I cannot remember an Echézeaux from the domaine blessed with so much exuberance and charm at this early stage in its evolution, leaving the mouth tingling with glee after it has departed. Not to be underestimated, this should drink for 20–30 years.

About the Producer

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or DRC is one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world with 25.5 hectares mostly in Vosne-Romanée on the route des Grands Crus in the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits of the Burgundy vineyards (named after the 1.8 hectare Clos de la Romanée-Conti, one of the most prestigious mythical grands crus in the world). The civil company of the same name was founded in 1942 by Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. It is now co-managed for their heir family by the winegrowers Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal.
