Tasting notes

This wine is a gorgeously elegant, complex, feminine, highly-detailed and rich wine. I was surprised by how well it showed, and feel it can be drunk over the course of the next 10 years. Importer: Wilson-Daniels, St. Helena, CA; tel. (707) 963-9661.

Very pale ruby-brick colour. Wonderfully open, fragrant nose of rose petals, dried cranberries, iron ore, cinnamon and cardamom. The palate reveals the most approachable wine of the 1995 DRC line-up giving plenty of opulent fruit supported by crisp acidity and a low to medium level of silky tannins. Very long spicy finish.

The first Domaine de la Romanee-Conti wine I ever tasted at Corney & Barrow. Limpid pink hue. A lovely, feminine nose - just pure glorious, uncomplicated Pinot. Quite tart, refreshing, vigorous. Great poise. Not complex but so drinkable. Very fine. Drink from 1999. Tasted February 1998.

Medium-ruby colored, the Echezeaux displays a deep nose of berries and spice, and an elegant, floral (roses), cherry-filled, perfumed, medium-bodied personality. Delicious and easy to drink, this wine should be held for 4 years and consumed over the following 6-8 years. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. The wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. Pinot Noir, a fragile varietal, reacts poorly to fining, filtration, and careless bottling techniques, I recommend caution when considering buying a red burgundy based on cask samples. I called it as I tasted it, and hope the bottled wine reflects the quality of the samples I was provided. Drc wines are not subjected to any filtration or fining and undergo only one racking. Importer: Wilson-Daniels, St. Helena, CA; tel. (707) 963-9661.

About the Producer

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or DRC is one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world with 25.5 hectares mostly in Vosne-Romanée on the route des Grands Crus in the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits of the Burgundy vineyards (named after the 1.8 hectare Clos de la Romanée-Conti, one of the most prestigious mythical grands crus in the world). The civil company of the same name was founded in 1942 by Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. It is now co-managed for their heir family by the winegrowers Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal.
