Tasting notes

This wine needed a few minutes and some swirling before it began in blossom into a pretty floral and fruit perfume of lilacs, red cherries and crushed raspberries with a slightly wild, meaty / earthy undercurrent. Medium bodied, it really delivers in the mouth with elegant but intense flavors, crisp acid, medium-firm very fine-grained tannins and a long finish.

This Echezeaux is at an intriguing stage. It has a striking feral nose: damp earth, woodland, broody, sea salt and a touch of fennel and green pepper. The stalkiness is quite noticeable at present. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of bell pepper on the entry, with tart black cherry, iodine and a touch of tar/cedar towards the finish. Fine, but perhaps lacking a little class at the moment. Drink now-2018. Tasted June 2010.

The 2002 Echezeaux displays a demure nose of herbal, pepper-laced blackberries. Less generous at this stage than the Vosne, it has a light to medium-bodied character with white pepper, black fruit, and stone flavors. Its long finish reveals highly present, structure-giving tannin. Drink it between 2007-2014. Importer: Wilson Daniels, St. Helena, CA; tel. (707) 963-9661

Limpid ruby. The nose is much fuller than the Vosne-Romanee with a definite hedgerow nose. Then notes of strawberry and tar begin to evolve. Quite complex for Echezeaux. The palate has good weight with fine balance. Beautiful sweet core of cherry and strawberry, but not DRC's usual silky texture - this has a rustic edge to it. A little tar on the finish. A very impressive Echezeaux. Tasted February 2005.

About the Producer

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or DRC is one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world with 25.5 hectares mostly in Vosne-Romanée on the route des Grands Crus in the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits of the Burgundy vineyards (named after the 1.8 hectare Clos de la Romanée-Conti, one of the most prestigious mythical grands crus in the world). The civil company of the same name was founded in 1942 by Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. It is now co-managed for their heir family by the winegrowers Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal.
