The 2010 Barolo Bricco Boschis is the flagship wine from this historic estate in Castiglione Falletto. The personality here is dark and brooding with savory aromas of cured meat and smoked bacon in a leading role. The intensity is bright and vibrant and the longer you contemplate the wine, the more it offers. Following a few swirls of the glass, you encounter sweet cherry, white almond skin, licorice and pressed rose. Still young, the wine shows enormous complexity. Its balanced structure and acidity would pair next to succulent lamb chops or any number of sophisticated meat recipes. Drink: 2016-2026. Five generations of the Cavallotto family have been making wine at this 25-hectare estate in Castiglione Falletto. In addition to the Barolo Bricco Boschis tasted here, Cavallotto makes two excellent Riservas: Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe and Riserva Vignolo. Today, heirs Alfio, Giuseppe and Laura continue to produce the noninterventionist wines that have earned this estate a steady and enthusiastic following. The results in 2010 are nothing short of excellent: In my mind, Cavallotto has produced one of the most exemplarily wines of the entire 2010 vintage. (aged in Slavonian oak botti): Deep red with ruby highlights. Wild, reduced aromas of black fruits, roast coffee and flinty minerality; extremely primary. Dense, chewy and ripe, with youthfully backward flavors of musky black raspberry and minerals. Evolving very slowly in cask.
About the Producer
At the gates of Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of the Barolo Zone, on the slopes of the Bricco Boschis, one finds the Cavallotto Winery, which lies on 25 hectares of land. Since 1928, the Cavallotto family has owned the estate Tenuta Bricco Boschis. In 1946, they were the first cultivators in Castiglione Falletto to vinify all of their estate’s fruit. In 1948 they released the first bottling of their own BAROLO wine, with the label and registered trademark of Cavallotto. Today the children of Olivio – Laura, Giuseppe and Alfio, the 4th generation working the family farm – continue to exclusively vinify the grapes produced in their estate vineyards into DOC and DOCG wines: Barolo, Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba, Langhe Nebbiolo, Langhe Freisa, Langhe “Grign” made from Grignolino grapes, Langhe Chardonnay and “Pinner” made from Pinot Nero grapes.
