The entry-level 2006 Barolo Bricco Boschis, itself a single-vineyard bottling from a near-monopole, is once again terrific. This is Cavallotto’s most fruit-driven Barolo, and in 2006 the wine offers up generous red cherries, kirsch, flowers, spices and minerals in a relatively feminine style for this bottling. For now, the 2006 looks to be another highly promising Barolo Bricco Boschis. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026. Cavallotto may very well be the greatest Barolo producer few people have ever heard of, something that continues to mystify me. Truth is, it isn’t just the Barolos here that are impressive, the entry-level wines are every bit as delicious and well-priced. As always, Cavallotto is among the last producers to bottle, and all of these wines were sampled from tank. Readers who appreciate a firm, classic style of Barolo will want to spend some time getting to know Cavallotto. The estate’s 2006 Barolo Bricco Boschis offers up dark red cherries, leather, anise and spices, all of which come together nicely on a mid-weight frame. The 2006 possesses gorgeous persistence on the palate and a long, mineral-laced finish, even if it doesn’t have the sheer appeal or promise today of the 2005. This is a rather feminine Bricco Boschis. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026. Cavallotto has been on a tear of late. This year I tasted a number of exceptional wines from this small, family-run property. In particular, readers should keep an eye out for the estate’s 2005s. Late flowering that year reduced the crop by nearly 50% and resulted in a set of huge, powerful wines that are atypical for the vintage and that should age exquisitely over the coming years. About the Producer

At the gates of Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of the Barolo Zone, on the slopes of the Bricco Boschis, one finds the Cavallotto Winery, which lies on 25 hectares of land. Since 1928, the Cavallotto family has owned the estate Tenuta Bricco Boschis. In 1946, they were the first cultivators in Castiglione Falletto to vinify all of their estate’s fruit. In 1948 they released the first bottling of their own BAROLO wine, with the label and registered trademark of Cavallotto. Today the children of Olivio – Laura, Giuseppe and Alfio, the 4th generation working the family farm – continue to exclusively vinify the grapes produced in their estate vineyards into DOC and DOCG wines: Barolo, Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba, Langhe Nebbiolo, Langhe Freisa, Langhe “Grign” made from Grignolino grapes, Langhe Chardonnay and “Pinner” made from Pinot Nero grapes.
