Tasted at Roberson’s in London. This has a rather odd, almost “algae” like nose although it develops an essence of mineralite with aeration. The palate has a Graves-like entry, hints of roasted chestnut, quite savoury but some dryness is creeping in towards the second half. Sharp acidity, rather foursquare and “chunky”. Drink now. Tasted April 2009.

Bit of a barnyardy nose with cedar and blackcurrants. Not quite as harmonious as the others on the palate. Moderate tannins. Lacking a little depth and cohesion. Tasted September 2000.

I have noticed in my tastings that the second wine of Lafite-Rothschild, Carruades de Lafite, has improved over recent years. The 1995 is a 40% Merlot/60% Cabernet Sauvignon blend. It exhibits more of the trademark characteristics of its bigger sibling. Elegant, with spicy new oak, lead pencil, and creamy black currant fruit, this is a medium-bodied, finesse-styled wine with excellent purity and overall equilibrium. It is much more accessible than the 1996, and should drink well between now and 2010.

Less ripe shoe polish and mint aromas. Smoother and less rustic than the above, but not as expressive or dense. But this is bright and nicely defined, with clear black fruit flavor.
