As I wrote earlier this year, the 2019 Tronquoy-Lalande has turned out beautifully, and it continues to show very well, offering up inviting aromas of wild berries, spices, rose petals and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, layered and sensual, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, vibrant finish, it's reminiscent of a somewhat more sun-kissed and extroverted sibling of the terrific 2016 at this address.

The 2019 Tronquoy-Lalande has turned out very well, offering up inviting aromas of wild berries, cassis, warm spices and rose petals, framed by a discreet patina of oak. Medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with terrific depth at the core, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins, it's a wine to buy by the case. One of the Médoc's greatest values over the last decade, Tronquoy-Lalande sits opposite Meyney and Montrose (its sister château) on a beautiful ridge of gravel some eight meters deep.

The 2019 Tronquoy-Lalande is a huge, powerful wine. A blast of inky dark fruit, charcoal, chocolate, spice and menthol gives the 2019 its decidedly exuberant personality. The 2019 is not exactly subtle, but it certainly offers plenty of punch. The tannins are a bit rustic, otherwise the 2019 is commendable.

About the Producer

Château Tronquoy-Lalande is a 30-hectare estate in St Estèphe on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. The property is owned by the Bouygues family, proprietors of nearby Ch. Montrose. In her book Inside Bordeaux, Jane Anson calls Tronquoy-Lalande “one of the most reliable buys of the appellation.” The Bouygues family bought Tronquoy-Lalande in 2006. Their portfolio also includes near-neighbour Montrose, Clos Rougeard in Saumur-Champigny and a majority stake in Domaine Henri Rebourseau in Gevrey-Chambertin. Hervé Berland, formerly Managing Director at Ch. Mouton Rothschild, oversees all the estates. Tronquoy-Lalande’s Operations Manager, Yves Delsol, has been here for decades. The 30-hectare vineyard surrounds the château. Soils here are deep gravel and clay. Plantings are a majority of Merlot (52%), with 39% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance split between Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. A new winery was completed here in 2010.
