The 1999 Tenuta di Trinoro (70% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot) presents a distinctly over-ripe, almost raisinated personality, along with notes of chocolate and sweet toasted oak on a massively concentrated frame, with outstanding length and a lingering touch of sweetness on the finish. It shows excellent balance but should be a relatively early-maturing Tenuta di Trinoro. As befits a producer who pushes the envelope, with this wine Franchetti seems to have gone a bit too far. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017.

Deep garnet in color, there’s a wonderful earthy / meaty / smoked game character tot the nose with touches of sweaty leather, warm cassis, prunes and cigar boxes. Rich and full in the mouth, it’s enlivened with medium-high acid. The medium to firm level of chewy tannins nicely texture the long earthy finish.

Cropped at yields of 26 hectoliters per hectare, this profound, dark purple-colored offering reveals noteworthy aromas of mocha, black fruits, spice box, and toast. It possesses multiple layers, astounding richness, gorgeous purity, definition, and elegance, medium to full body, and a beautiful texture. Anticipated maturity: now-2015. This wine, in the style of Franchetti's friends, Peter Sissick and Jean-Luc Thunevin, was not fined, filtered, or stablized, and essentially represents the most honest/authentic essence of their vineyard. The 1999 Palazzi (800 cases of a blend of 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Merlot) boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a complex nose of currants, cigar box, plums, and cherry liqueur with a hint of toasty oak in the background. Full-bodied, elegant, and complex, with a savory mid-palate and sweet tannin, it will drink beautifully for 12-14 years.
