Medium red. Deep, ripe aromas of raspberry, redcurrant, rose petal and underbrush, with complementary oak tones. Rich, sappy and sweet; compellingly round and ripe but with lovely underlying minerality providing support to the red fruit flavors. Captivating wine with ripe tannins and excellent perfumed length. This boasts near-grand cru texture.

Bright medium red. A topnote of peppery spices lifts the aromas of raspberry, minerals and smoke; like the Orveaux, this shows hints of surmaturite with aeration. Plush and superconcentrated, if without quite the verve and early explosiveness of the Suchots. But this wine's volume and thickness are impressive for the vintage. Finishes very long, with suave tannins and lingering hints of smoke and earth.

The 2011 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts has a graphite-tinged bouquet that seems almost flinty, with sharp and focused tart red fruits that take a little time to mellow. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins, crisp acidity and a leafy but weighty/structured finish that lingers in the mouth. This is a Vosne 2011 that deserves three of four years in bottle before broaching. Drink 2016-2028. Sebastian Cathiard kindly offered two or three examples of the 2011 vintage after tasting through his 2012s at the domaine. Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Compared to the other four Malconsorts ‘11s in this peer group, the Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2011 from Sylvain Cathiard has the most vivacious red fruit on the nose with joyous red cherries, redcurrant and fresh strawberry scents. You might call this a carefree bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a keen line of acidity, but it does not deliver the same structure or complexity on the finish as others. This is still a fine Malconsorts that will benefit from several years in the cellar.
About the Producer
Domaine Sylvain Cathiard is a well-regarded family wine producer based in the village of Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits. It is known for its highly sought-after premium-priced Pinot Noir wines from plots in premier and grand cru vineyards throughout Vosne and the surrounding appellations. The domaine's history begins with Sylvain's grandfather, who began making wine in Burgundy in the 1930s. Sylvain's father André took over the winery in 1969, and ran it through to the 1980s when Sylvain became involved. He initially rented parcels of vines from his father and other vignerons to make his own wine, before he eventually taking over the family's vineyards. In 2006 his son Sébastien joined him and the domaine took on its contemporary name of Domaine Sylvain Cathiard et Fils. All the vineyard work is done by Sylvain and his wife and his son. The domaine has roughly five hectares (12 acres) of vines spread between Vosne-Romanée, Nuit-Saint-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny, including a tiny plot in Romanée-Saint-Vivant. The most prestigious of its wines come from this grand cru vineyard, and the portfolio also includes several premier cru wines from both Nuit-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée. Cathiard also makes village-level Vosne-Romanée and a Bourgogne Rouge, both of which command high prices.
