The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has a very light bouquet at first, and I wondered whether there was some TCA. But it responds to aeration, evolving more and more fruit. The palate is very well balanced and lightly spiced, with fine grip and structure. The lovely crescendo to a fresh, slightly austere finish suggests that this needs several years in bottle. The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru matures in 50% new oak. It has an exuberant vivacious bouquet with wild strawberry, Morello cherries and crushed stone, becoming increasingly floral with aeration. There is real intensity and perhaps more brightness compared to its Latricières and Chapelle siblings. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, quite animated and tensile with a very pure and caressing finish that might be more unstated than its peers, but feels just as persistent and engaging. And the good news? This year there are twenty barrels instead of just five last year.

About the Producer
Nicolas and David Rossignol oversee 13 hectares principally situated in Gevrey-Chambertin which, from 1997 to 2004, they slowly and fully converted to biodynamics. Their range entails 3 magnificent Grands crus that many a Burgundian wine lover only dreams of: Chambertin Grand Cru, Latricières Chambertin Grand Cru and Chapelle Chambertin Grand cru all of excellent quality and currently not stratospherically priced, at least for the moment! Thereafter are their 5 premier crus: Rossignol Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru "Clos Prieur", Rossignol Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru "Cherbaudes", Rossignol Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru "Aux Combottes", Rossignol Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru "Les Corbeaux" and Rossignol Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru "Petite Chapelle". Finally, their range is completed by 6 additional wines: a Rossignol Trapet Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, a remarkable Gevrey Chambertin "Les Etelois" (a climate that borders the Griotte Chambertin Grand cru), a Beaune 1er cru Les Teurons, a Beaune Les Mariages", a Savigny-lès-Beaune "Les Bas Liards" and finally a regional red Burgundy. The wines of Rossignol Trapet are pure, elegant, dense, but not over extracted, and are capable of going the distance.
