Tasting notes

Margaux's 2016 Pavillon Rouge is a gorgeous, precise wine that will offer plenty of drinking pleasure right out of the gate. Bright red cherry fruit, sweet tobacco and dried herbs are all laced together in this finely-knit, inviting wine. Hints of blood orange and mint add an attractive upper register. In 2016, Pavillon Rouge stands out for its persistence and impeccable balance.

The 2016 Pavillon Rouge is a gorgeous second wine, and one of the best recent vintages I have tasted. There is remarkable purity and precision to the flavors, while all the elements are in perfect balance for a wine at this level. Red-toned fruits, sweet floral notes and silky tannins infuse this expressive, flat-out delicious wine. The 84% Cabernet Sauvignon is the highest ever here. Quite simply, the 2016 is a superb Pavillon Rouge. Tasted two times.

The 2016 Pavillon Rouge de Château Margaux, bottled at the end of June, has a clean, precise bouquet of blackberry, bilberry, notes of violet and a hint of orange pith. It gains intensity in the glass with every swirl. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin and a fine bead of acidity, and it feels linear and compact the moment. Quite saline in the mouth, with a touch of brine toward a finish that is almost broody in style. Very fine, though it might need four to five years to reach its drinking window.

Very concentrated and tannic Pavillon Rouge. Muscular. Full body and lots of intense fruit. Four-square.

The blackcurrant and floral aromas with brick and hot stones are tantalizing. Flowers underneath it all. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins with beautiful ripeness that highlights the palate. Second wine of Château Margaux. Try after 2024.
About the Producer
Sold under the name of “Château Margaux 2nd wine”, it took its permanent name of Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux in 1908. After an eclipse between the thirties and the mid-seventies, its production restarted on the arrival of André Mentzelopoulos in 1977 and at first greatly increased in order to improve the quality of the first wine. From the mid – 1990s, the creation of a third wine in its turn, allowed for a more and more rigorous selection for Pavillon Rouge. For a few years now, a third of the harvest has gone into the first wine, barely 30% into the Pavillon Rouge, and the remainder is divided between the third and fourth wines. The quality of Pavillon Rouge has become very close to that of the first wine because all the plots involved contributed to the blending of Château Margaux not so long ago. Of course there isn’t the same complexity, the same depth, the same “magic” but the flavours are close and the balance in the mouth leads to the same subtle senses of power and softness. In general it is ready to drink a little earlier whilst retaining an excellent potential to age largely beyond 30 or 40 years.
