Tasting notes

Bright, dark red, but without the ruby tones of some of the Lucien Le Moine '14s. Musky, slightly reduced aromas of raspberry, strawberry, plum, meat, dried rose petal and underbrush. Wonderfully rich, dense and saline if still a bit reduced. This concentrated, seriously tactile wine finishes with terrific palate-staining length but will need eight to ten years in the cellar to really express itself.

Deep red. A note of musky reduction dissipated to reveal exuberant scents of clementine, Asian spices, smoked meat and iron; conveys a strong orange skin character. Pungent and energetic, offering sexy flavors of red plum, redcurrant, smoke and earth. Still a bit tricky to taste owing to the bound-up CO2 (this wine went through a very slow, long alcoholic fermentation), but the supple finish shows fine-grained tannins and superb lift.

The 2014 Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru has a withdrawn bouquet at first, only gradually unfolding with light cranberry leaf, bay leaf and strawberry scents, a cold stone note emerging later. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite focused and poised, although I would like to see more weight and body develop on the finish. It seems to have stage fright compared to the Clos de la Roche.

About the Producer

Domaine Lucien Le Moine is a small-scale, boutique winery based in Burgundy, France. It was established in 1999 by Mounir and Rotem Saouma, who named the estate after their son, Lucien. The winery is known for its meticulous approach to winemaking, focusing on producing limited quantities of high-quality wines. The philosophy behind Domaine Lucien Le Moine revolves around the concept of "micro-negotiant." Rather than owning their own vineyards, Mounir and Rotem carefully select grapes from trusted growers across various appellations in Burgundy. This allows them to have control over every aspect of the winemaking process, from vineyard management to the final bottling. The winery's production is extremely limited, with a focus on premier cru and grand cru vineyards.
