The 2017 Bolgheri Rosso is a rich, explosive wine that embodies all of the natural richness and opulence of the year. Black cherry, bittersweet chocolate, plum, mocha, licorice, spice, leather and menthol burst from the glass in this exuberant, flamboyant red. Not a shy wine by any means, the 2017 possesses tons of intensity and volume in all of its dimensions. This is an especially heady wine, even by Bolgheri standards, and that is saying a lot! And yet all the elements are so well balanced.

As usual, Le Macchiole has done a great job with all of its releases, including the lower-end bottles such as the 2017 Bolgheri Rosso. There is a sure sense of precision and sharpness here with bright berry and black cherry. Those aromas show quality and craftsmanship. You would do well to pair this accessible, mid-weight wine with simple pasta topped with fresh tomato sauce.

A fresh, vivid red with aromas of crushed blueberries and fresh flowers that follow through to a medium body. Firm tannins that are polished and relatively integrated. Drink or hold.

The ongoing development of this 24 hectare, organically farmed estate, has enabled the winery to become a leading Italian brand. Now under the leadership of Cinzia and her talented team, there is a rigorous approach to everything that they do. This shows itself in championing single varieties in their very top wines, in planting density and viticulture, harvest and wine making. One variety, one wine, is the philosophy adopted by the winery. All the Macchiole’s top wines are single-varietal bottling: Using Syrah to produce Scrio, Merlot to make Messorio and the Cabernet Franc is kept for the iconic wine, Paleo Rosso, recognized as one of the finest examples of Bolgheri winemaking.
