Tasting notes

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. The Chateau Lalande Borie 2010 has quite a herbaceous, tertiary bouquet that is broody and introspective. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation and poise, fine tannins and a composed, tobacco-infused finish that fans out nicely. This is very fine. Tasted January 2014.

Another sleeper of the vintage from Bruno Borie, this 2010 is atypically powerful, rich and concentrated, with loads of sweet black currants, mocha and a hint of caramel. Deep, lush, succulent, and fruit-driven, it is a wine to drink in its first 10-12 years of life.

A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc delivering 13.95% alcohol and a pH 3.71. The nose is a little taciturn at first with blackberry, a touch of cassis, a hint of espresso and minerals. Good definition. The palate is full-bodied with fine but sturdy tannins, very nice focus with a refined, nicely poised, very pure finish where the Cabernet lends a touch of graphite and cedar. This is a very fine Lalande-Borie that might be over-shadowed by Ducru. Drink 2015- Tasted March 2011.

Matured in 30% new oak and bottled in June 2012, the Lalande-Borie needs time in the glass before wakening – earthy and dusty at first, but gaining clarity with each swirl. There are subtle notes of blackberry, bilberry and graphite that are very well defined, the oak enmeshed into the fruit profile. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy, generous opening. Cedar-infused brambly red berry fruit occupy the driving seat and there is crisp acidity from start to finish, with just a slight attenuation that should fill out as the wine recovers from bottling. Good potential here, but it deserves an hour decanting. Tasted November 2012.

I found some bottle variation when tasting this wine, but at its best, this is a delicious blend of 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc. Coming from a 75-acre vineyard further inland than the riverside Ducru Beaucaillou (same owners), this wine offers up plenty of fruit, soft tannins, and decent acidity. It is potentially a sleeper of the vintage if it shows as well as the best bottles did. Drink it over the next decade.

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Lalande-Borie gives up exuberant notes of baked raspberries, chocolate-covered cherries and mulberries with wafts of black currant pastilles, dried roses and dusty soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a good amount of juicy, expressive fruit with a chewy texture and lively acidity, finishing on a stewed tea note.

2010 Lalande-Borie has a feisty and animated bouquet, more red fruit than black, with attractive pencil lead scents coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, tobacco and graphite, quite penetrating and sharp on the finish. Bottle age will just smooth out the edges, but I appreciate the energy in situ. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal.

About the Producer

The history of Château Lalande Borie is related to the purchase of Château Lagrange, Third Classified Growth in 1855, by the current owners in 1964: the Borie Family. Thus was born the Château Lalande Borie is located in the municipality of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, along the road of great wines along the estuary of the Gironde. The vineyard, thirty hectares in one piece, located on a gravelly plateau planted with noble grapes having been the subject of a meticulous choice, produces an elegant wine and a great finesse. The grape varieties are composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. During the grape harvest, and for the sake of excellence, sorting is done directly in the vineyard thanks to mobile tables avoiding all contact with grapes litigious. The most precious care taken, both in the vineyard and in the vinification or bottling (oenological control, homogeneity of the lots …), the judicious balance between the modern techniques and the respect of the traditions contributed to the notoriety of the believed.
