Tasting notes

Reviewed by: Robert M. Parker, Jr.
The Musigny is open, perfumed, and easy to evaluate. It is not a big wine, but is harmonious, well balanced, and richly fruity. The 1985s from this famous firm are all impeccably clean, correct, well-made wines. Drouhin has managed to preserve the individual identity of each appellation as the wines do not taste alike. There is, of course, a house style, but that can be said of the wines from a small grower as well.

The 1985 Musigny Grand Cru is mature in appearance with bricking on the rim, though less than the 1983. Red cherry, soy, pressed flowers and iron rust form the pretty nose, that ferrous tincture becoming more evident with time. The palate is medium-bodied and well balanced, and gentle in terms of grip. Grainy-textured toward a finish laced with cumin and black pepper; orange peel and Szechuan pepper appear on the aftertaste. Quite a multifaceted Musigny. Excellent. Tasted at the Drouhin Musigny vertical in London.
