Tasting notes

Drouhin's 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is showing very well, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, plums, dark chocolate, incense and petals. Full-bodied, rich and enveloping, it's broad and dramatic, with a concentrated core of fruit, succulent acids, and velvety tannins that render it unusually approachable at this early stage.

The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a juicy nose with dark berry fruit, cola and touches of brown spice. The palate is medium-bodied with an aniseed tinged entry, light tannins, rather worked with a simple, bretty finish. I don't quite get this wine - it just feels lackluster. Pleasurable but I need to see more complexity evolve on the finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes from vines close to the small tower within the vineyard. Limpid in color, it has a crisp, well-defined bouquet, showing more precision than the Clos-de-Bèze tasted alongside. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky texture, quite rich but nicely focused, with probably more oak on the finish that will need to be subsumed. The 30% whole bunch lends a little freshness that is crucial for this blend. Good potential.
