Tasting notes

(Drouhin did not use include their lower parcel in the blend in 2013): Good dark red. Very high-pitched, intensely spicy nose. Intensely flavored and fresh, displaying terrific spicy energy to its dark cherry and mineral flavors. Conveys a captivating impression of weightlessness. Ripe tannins are already nicely integrated with the wine's fruit. This should gain in complexity as it unfolds with bottle aging.

Medium red. Enticing perfumed lift to the aromas of black cherry, licorice and flowers. Juicy and intense if a bit youthfully imploded, conveying excellent energy and lift to the saline flavors of dark fruits, licorice and spicy oak. This was vinified with about 20% whole clusters and has a strong spine for aging.

Tasted blind at Fine & Rare Wines' Clos Vougeot tasting, the 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from Maison Joseph Drouhin has a light and breezy nose, not as complex as others, but with attractive red cherry, crushed strawberry and violet aromas. It actually gains more nuance as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with nicely interwoven new oak. Modest weight in the mouth, what I like here is the well-judged acidity that maintains tension from start to finish. It needs time to fully subsume the wood; and to quibble, it needs more persistence. But at its core is a really quite pretty, comely Clos Vougeot.

The 2013 Clos de Vougeot comes from two parcels vinified separately (just like at Bouchard Père) with partial whole cluster. It was picked on October 9 and includes partial whole cluster. It has quite a dense bouquet with surprisingly dark berry fruit, perhaps a little animal and Musigny-like. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit and a lovely saline touch. There is certainly good density here with a fine sense of symmetry on the finish. This is one of the best Clos de Vougeot wines in the making.
