The 2014 Musigny Grand Cru is just being released. Wafting from the glass with aromas of rose petals, Egyptian musk, orange rind, peonies, warm spices and red berries, it's full-bodied, velvety and perfumed, with superb concentration, lively acids and fine, powdery tannins that still assert themselves on the long, penetrating and gently chalky finish. This is a brilliant Musigny, but while Mugnier has done some of the work for his clients by aging the wine at the domaine for seven or eight years, it still demands a decade of additional patience.

The 2014 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a very precise bouquet, extremely pure and elegant with wild red berry fruit and pastille-like elegance and purity. It feels like the older sibling of the Amoureuses. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin that lend it a cashmere-like texture. It is extremely well balanced with a hint of dried orange rind towards the poised finish. This is simply a very classy and sophisticated Musigny Grand Cru and like Mugnier's wines, what initially seems straightforward will surely reveal hidden nuances that are currently locked away inside. One thing is for sure: the mouthwatering salinity on the finish is just spellbinding.

Bright medium red. More expressive on the nose today than the Amoureuses, offering ineffable scents of black raspberry, lavender and flinty, smoky minerality. By far the plushest and deepest of these 2014s but still with outstanding definition and verve. This wonderfully fine-grained, classically dry Musigny boasts bulletproof fruit and finishes with impressive medicinal reserve. Beginning with the 2013 Musigny, Mugnier will be delaying the release of his top bottling for a minimum of two years--and possibly several years more than that--as he finds this wine especially hard to read in its extreme youth.

(13% alcohol without chaptalization): Bright, full red. Scented, high-pitched aromas of raspberry, blood orange and white pepper. Tangy red fruit and saline mineral flavors show outstanding sappy energy and inner-mouth perfume. This utterly seamless, very pure wine finishes with great aromatic persistence. Don't expect to see this beauty in the market for a while: Mugnier hasn't yet released his 2013 Musigny and plans to hold it back for several years. Apparently, he was upset to see his 2012 Musigny on restaurant wine lists as early as last winter.
