The 2013 Le Musigny Grand Cru has a pixilated, mineral-driven bouquet with dark berries, hints of undergrowth, orange blossom and potpourri. This is just entrancing. You just want to remain in its presence. The palate is medium-bodied, strict at the moment, with both salinity and mineralité at its heart rather than layers of fruit. This is a more introspective and perhaps even conservative Musigny, but one that I suspect will age with grace. Excellent.

Released only late last year, Mugnier's 2013 Musigny Grand Cru is still far from true maturity, but it has at least begun a graceful evolution, unwinding in the glass with scents of exotic spices, red berries, orange rind, rose petals, potpourri and sweet soil tones. Full-bodied, ample and velvety, with powdery, melting tannins and lively acids, the cool, late harvest has imparted a cool, crystalline purity to its deep core of fruit. Long and sapid, ideally one would forget it for another decade to see it at the beginning of what will be a long plateau of maturity.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a ripe, sweet and showy bouquet that demonstrated more extraction and new oak than Domaine de la Vougeraie's Musigny, though it maintains outstanding definition. The palate is medium-bodied with a lot of weight and volume, layers of ripe dark cherry mixed with blackberry and wild strawberry, veins of allspice and bay towards the aristocratic finish. There is presence here, a little uncouth at the moment, however, there is absolutely no question that it will age well. Tasted September 2016.

The 2013 Musigny is a classic Mugnier wine; understated, elusive, but also striking in its beauty. All the elements fall into place in a gracious, impeccable Burgundy that captivates all the senses. Silky tannins wrap around the inviting finish. A model of total grace, the Musigny is also surprisingly open and expressive today, even if the structural elements are very much in evidence. What a thrill it will be to watch the 2013 develop over the coming decades.

Bright, dark red. Distinctly cooler and more medicinal on the nose than the Amoureuses. Spicier and tighter on the palate, showing some exhilarating high tones and a hint of medicinal herbs but less of the premier cru's early sweetness and sex appeal. In a more muscular style, yet it conveys an impression of weightlessness in spite of its outstanding density. More salty and soil-inflected on the finish than the Amoureuses, with a powerful tannic spine that should carry it for a long time. This could hardly be more different than the Amoureuses today.

Bright, deep red. Blueberry, blackberry and medicinal herbs on the nose and palate, complicated by Asian spices and black and white pepper. Boasts outstanding juicy cut but comes across as youthfully imploded today, with an almost medicinal pungency. The wine's exhilarating sugar/acid balance contributes to its penetrating character. Densely packed, tactile and strong but very hermetic today, finishing with a hint of youthful bitterness; in comparison, the Amoureuses is much more extroverted. A real high-wire act of urgent crunchy fruit and brilliant acidity, and built for long and graceful development in bottle.

About the Producer

Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is a Burgundian wine producer based in Chambolle-Musigny. It is particularly well-known for its Musigny Grand Cru wine which is regarded as a benchmark for that vineyard. While the estate is most closely associated with Pinot Noir wines from Chambolle-Musigny, it has 10 hectares (25 acres) of vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges as well. The Château de Chambolle-Musigny has been owned by the Mugnier family since 1863. From 1950, as there was no winemaker in the family, the vineyards were contracted out to Faiveley and Bruno Clair, with the latter selling the wine in bulk. Between 1985 and 2004, Frédéric Mugnier was able to take back the vineyards as leases expired. On top of the Musigny Grand Cru, Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier makes a wine from the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru vineyard, as well as two premier cru wines, Les Fuées and Les Amoureuses, and a village-level wine. From the Nuits-Saint-Georges holdings, Mugnier makes a Clos des Fourches premier cru wine, and a red and a white premier cru from the Clos de la Maréchale vineyard, which is a monopole of the domaine. Vineyards are farmed without herbicides or pesticides and just two mildew treatments per year. Grapes are de-stemmed and whole berries are fermented in old open wooden vats. After around 16 months in oak, wines are bottled without fining and filtration.
