Description

Monvigliero hill is historically recognised as the “grand cru” of Verduno and one of the most representative of the entire Barolo area. Our vineyard is over 35 years old and is situated at an altitude of about 320 metres, facing south. It produces an austere but elegant wine, distinguished by aromatic complexity and depth of flavour.

The 2008 Barolo Monvigliero boasts serious power and richness in this vintage. A heady melange of dark red cherries, flowers, licorice, incense and smoke emerges from the glass as the Monvigliero captivates all of the senses. Unlike the Gramolere, the Monvigliero is quite youthful today. It needs at least a few years to strut its stuff, but is nevertheless impressive. Layers of fruit continue to build to a huge crescendo of aromas and flavors on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028. This is yet another solid set of wines from Fratelli Alessandria. Fine Barolo is never inexpensive, but these wines all deliver superb quality for the money. The single-vineyard Baroli are aged in a combination of French oak tonneaux and larger casks, an approach that works beautifully. Importer: Artisan Wine, Norwalk, CT; tel. (203) 866-4552

Pleasant berry and chocolate character with medium body, velvety tannins and a medium finish. Better in 2014.
