Tasting notes

To me, better than 90. A lovely complex nose of honey, marmalade and quince. Good concentration on the palate that has moderate levels of botrytis, strong attack and length. A little straight-laced and conservative, but decent enough. Drink now. Tasted May 2000.

The thick, very sweet, slightly heavy 1989 appears to be maturing at a fast pace. If drunk over the next 5-8 years it will provide an uncomplicated mouthful of sweet, candied fruit.

The 1989 Filhot has a purer and more vigorous bouquet compared to the 1990 Filhot with scents of dried pineapple, crème caramel and a touch of white flowers. This is pretty and more complex than the succeeding Filhot. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, good levels of botrytis, lively and citrus-fresh with a viscous and engaging finish of mandarin and peach, traces of butterscotch on the aftertaste. Bon vin. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Château Filhot.

About the Producer

Filhot Château is a prestigious winery located in the Bordeaux region of France. The winery is renowned for producing high-quality sweet white wines, making it one of the representatives of Bordeaux sweet wines. The history of Filhot Château dates back to the late 18th century when it was founded by Mr. Vicomte de Filhot. Today, the estate is managed and operated by his descendants, who continue to uphold traditional winemaking methods and the family's winemaking philosophy. Situated in the Sauternes appellation of the Bordeaux region, Filhot Château benefits from an ideal climate for grape cultivation, especially for the white grape varieties used in sweet wine production, such as Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. The winery is renowned for its meticulous grape selection and strict winemaking techniques, ensuring that each bottle of Filhot sweet wine reflects the craftsmanship and traditions of the estate. These sweet wines are typically fermented and aged in oak barrels known as "barriques," undergoing slow aging processes over several years to develop rich, complex, and highly aromatic characteristics. Filhot Château's sweet wines are known for their luscious texture, intense flavors, and balanced sweetness. Whether paired with desserts, cheeses, or enjoyed on their own, Filhot's sweet wines provide a delightful experience.
