Tasting notes

The Fèlsina 2017 Fontalloro pours out of the bottle with a bang. This pure expression of Sangiovese is luscious and dark with thick layers of dark fruit, plum, cherry, leather and tilled earth. This hot-vintage edition shows good depth and intensity with lots of that black-fruit energy and extra concentration that is typical of this growing season. However, you can always count on Fontalloro to show balance, and that's exactly what you get here despite the adversity of the scorching summer season. That Sangiovese acidity remains intact and crisp. Production is 30,000 bottles.

Fontalloro is exquisite in 2017. It is also such a contrast to the Rancia, as the two wines could not possibly be more different. Fontalloro is bright and vibrant, with more sweet red Sangiovese character than the darker Rancia. It is also incredibly delicious now, even though it clearly has the energy to age for many years. The 2017 is one of the finest Fontalloros I can remember tasting.

A powerful and dense 100% sangiovese with full body, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. A little extracted but it shows potential.

I like the clarity and linear quality to this with ripe-cherry and bark flavors. It’s full-bodied, though not heavy and ponderous. Racy and bright at the end. Drink or hold.

About the Producer

Etienne Sousse is a winery in Puligny-Montrachet that produces some of the most popular Chardonnay wines in Burgundy. Sousse's wines are prized for their elegance at the country level, and for their extra weight and concentration at the Premier and Grand Cru levels. The estate's portfolio includes leading products from Chevalier-Montrachet, Le Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Champs Gain. The estate consists of 15 hectares (37 acres) of vineyards in the communes of Puligny-Montrachet, Como-le-Grand and Chassagne-Montrachet, with a small amount of grapes sourced from outside. The grapes are fermented in oak barrels and aged in barrels for around a year - up to 33% new oak for the First Growths and 40% for the Grand Cru. After ageing in barrels, the wine is tanked and stored on its lees for a further six months. Etiensse was established at the forefront of production in Puligny-Montrachet by Etiensse himself (1903-1975). His 12 hectares (30 acres) estate was taken over by his son-in-law Gérard Boudot, although in 1991 Boudot's cousin Jean-Marc Boillot took out his share of the vineyard and asked Boudot and his family to make additional acquisitions to bring the estate back to its current size.
