The 2007 Saffredi is drop-dead gorgeous. Roasted coffee beans, grilled herbs, mocha and dark fruit emerge from this beautiful, textured wine. The richness of the fruit radiates through to the long, polished finish. The 2007 Saffredi impresses for its fabulous balance and soft, enveloping personality. It is another superb effort from proprietor Elisabetta Geppetti. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027.

Elisabetta Geppetti is doing just about everything right at Le Pupille. A massive tasting of 30 wines going back to 1987 found a number of older vintages in great shape and a signficiant rise in quality starting around 2000 that continues to the present. I will report on that tasting on www.erobertparker.com. In the meantime, readers will find much pleasure in these new releases. The only wine I didn't care for was the entry-level red Pelofino, which in 2008 and 2009 doesn't approach the level of quality readers have come to expect from Le Pupille. (a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and alicante Dark ruby. Light red berry and plum aromas along with riper coffee and dark chocolate nuances. Dense and rich but nicely focused, with a creamy texture to the black cherry, dried herb and milk chocolate flavors. Puts on considerable weight in the glass and displays a seductive floral quality on the long finish. Harmonious acidity gives this concentrated blend a light touch and an overall impression of refinement.

This is one of the surprise wines of this vertical tasting. The Fattoria le Pupille 2007 Saffredi is mature and complex with rich concentration and lots of balsamic intensity that draws in notes of licorice and medicinal herb. I had reservations regarding the hot 2007 vintage back in the day and doubted its capacity for long cellar aging. This wine is drinking very nicely right now and is probably near its peak. The season was hot, but we’ve seen similar temperatures more frequently in the years since. September rains in 2007 are what saved the vintage and brought fruit into balance. The Merlot used in the blend was harvested at the beginning of September, and that grape gives additional richness and density. The wine preforms best at the beginning, but the intensity of its aromas begins to fade 20 minutes or so later.

This is full throttle on the palate with blackberries, fresh herbs such as rosemary and currants. Full body, with velvety tannins and a long, long finish finish. Leave this for four to five years.

About the Producer

Fattoria Le Pupille is a leading wine estate in the Maremma region of coastal Tuscany. It is best known for Saffredi, a Toscana IGT blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot that has been described as the Lafite of Tuscany. Owner Elisabetta Geppetti is known as the Lady of Morellino and the Ambassador of Maremma. In 1992 she became head of the Consorzio for Morellino di Scansano - the region's association of grape growers and wine producers. She was the first woman to gain that position in any Italian wine region. The estate has 75 hectares (185 acres) of vineyards in total, the core of which are located around the village of Peretta. These vineyard holdings include the 25ha (62 acres) of the original Pupille vineyard and the 5-ha (12-acre) plot responsible for Saffredi. There is also a 20-ha (50-acre) plot near Magliano, and the winery itself is located near Grosseto. This is a modern facility located within the traditionally-styled building that features on the label. As well as Saffredi, Le Pupille makes three Sangiovese-based Morellino di Scansano cuvées. These are a "normale", a Riserva, and the Poggio Valente Riserva, which is aged for 15 months in a mix of small and large barrels. There is also a IGT Maremma Toscana Rosso, named Pelofino, which is a blend of Sangiovese and Syrah with a small amount of Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc. 2015 saw the first release of Le Pupille, a 100 percent Syrah aged for 12 months in 300-liter French oak barrels. This is priced above the flagship Saffredi. The estate also makes a Rosamatti rosato and a Poggio Argentato white based on Sauvignon Blanc with Petit Manseng, Traminer and Semillon. Piemme is a recently introduced single variety deluxe white wine from Petit Manseng . The lineup is completed by SolAlto, a botrytized white wine made from Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. In total around 500,000 bottles are produced each year.
