Côte-Rôtie "La Turque" is one of the flagship of the Domaine GUIGAL. A powerful wine with spicy notes, its terroirs from côte brune with “blond accents” lends it a great elegance.

The La Turque 1997 is slightly riper on the nose than La Mouline. Morello cherry mixed with some orange blossom and a touch of apricot. Open and expressive. Although it is smooth on the palate, conversely it does not have the puissance or focus of La Mouline but has a decadent tar-tinged, cassis finish. Superb. Tasted May 2001

The 1997 Cote Rotie La Turque is dazzling, displaying high extract, and a flamboyant, penetrating, exquisite nose of black fruits intermixed with smoke, violets, and pepper. Powerful and rich, with no hard edges, this layered, multidimensional, staggeringly concentrated and intense wine will turn heads when it is released. Moreover, it hould last for two decades or more. The 1997 Cote Rotie La Turque flirts with perfection. The color is a saturated purple and the wine exhibits a smoky, Asian spice, creme de cassis character with roasted meat, licorice, and melted road tar scents. Full-bodied and long, with low acidity, it will be undeniably appealing and complex when young, but promises to last for 15 or more years. The 1997 Cote Rotie La Turque had not been racked for twelve months, yet it was not revealing a trace of reduction, a quality Marcel Guigal attributes to the fact that no sulphur is added. It reveals a saturated ruby/purple color, and an extraordinary bouquet of smoke, Asian spice, creme de cassis, roasted meats, and melted asphalt. The dense purple-colored, profound 1997 Cote Rotie La Turque (5-7% Viognier added to the blend) offers creme de cassis, licorice, and espresso aromas as well as notions of melted asphalt. Compared to La Mouline, it has additional layers as well as structure, sweet tannin, and exhilarating levels of opulence and ripe fruit. Anticipated maturity: now-2018. The 1997 Côte-Rôtie La Turque from Etienne Guigal offers high-toned, quite precocious blue fruit, iris flower, hints of graphite and cracked black pepper. It is still fairly youthful, likewise the palate is pure and decadent, lavished in new oak that seems to be proportionate to the fruit, graphite and flint lending welcome tension on the finish. Impressive, but this needs another five to seven years in the cellar.

Good red-ruby. Perfumed aromas of cassis, violet, lilac and brown spices. Lush and aromatic in the mouth; the combination of a bit more acidity than the Mouline and its mineral and gunflint elements gives this wine noteworthy elegance and firm shape. Tannins are quite fine.

Bright ruby. Reticent, liqueur-like aromas of griotte cherry and shoe polish. Rich and spherical, with extraordinary inner-mouth aromatics. Superripe and long on personality. Wonderfully ripe, persistent aftertaste. Utterly transcends the vintage.

Darker red-ruby color. Pungent, almost liqueur-like griotte cherry nose, complicated by a minty nuance. Quite thick and spicy but very supple; in contrast to the '97 La Mouline, this wine is taking up the oak quickly. Rather powerfully structured for the vintage. Very long and spicy, but almost brutal on the finish today. Very impressive material here, but extremely unevolved.
About the Producer
In 1946, Etienne Guigal founded Château Guigal in the village of Ampuis, the winemaking heart of the Rhône. The village of Ampuis is rich in history, with vineyards that are over 2,400 years old and buildings that still date back to Roman times, and it was here that Etienne Guigal arrived in 1923 at the age of 14. He decided to devote himself to winemaking, which he did for more than 67 years. In 1961, the young Marcel Guigal took over the management of the estate from his father. Thanks to Marcel's efforts, Château Guigal began to acquire some well-known wineries and grew in strength.
