Tasting notes

The 2013 Echézeaux Grand Cru is matured in 100% new oak. The nose is dark and broody, but very well defined and unfurls with hints of iodine and seaweed. The new wood is clearly well integrated and allows the terroir to shine through. The palate is vivacious and bounds along with energy that permeates through the blackberry, boysenberry, mineral and crushed violets notes, then with aeration, along comes a note of kirsch. This is well structured and contains so much energy on the finish that it might well turn out to be Emmanuel’s best contribution to the 2013 vintage.

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux was enduring an extremely long malolactic when I tasted it from barrel in December 2014. So yes, the nose is difficult to assess but the palate is very well defined and the mineralité already shines through. I like the primal energy here, the finish tense and full of frisson that bodes well for whenever it deigns us with its presence. Will it match the imperious 2012? Hmm...not quite sure about that, but it should be a worthy follow-up.

The 2013 Côte de Nuits Villages, which as always comes from Rouget’s vines in Corgolin, possesses a vibrant red cherry and kirsch-scented nose that has a more sorbet-like freshness compared to the Bourgogne Rouge. The palate contains plenty of energy with a supple tannin and immense purity. This is suave and sensual, a wine that will be deceptively approachable, but I suspect will last longer than people think.

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée Village has slightly darker fruit than the Nuits-Saint-Georges ’13: light floral scents with orange rind developing just behind. There is good structure here and a captivating salinity that furnishes the long and tender finish. This is an enigmatic Vosne-Romanée that may well punch above its weight once in bottle. Watch this one carefully...

Taken from a new barrel, the 2013 Nuits Saint Georges Villages has a confit-like bouquet with raspberry jam and kirsch, mineral scents just behind. The palate is medium-bodied, quite fleshy in the mouth with supple tannins. The fruit spectrum edges closer to black on the finish that has more persistence than the Vosne-Romanée Village at this stage. This should be afforded two or three years in bottle.

The 2013 Bourgogne Rouge has a clean and pure red cherry and strawberry bouquet that sprints straight out of the blocks. The palate is very pure with fine acidity and a touch of spice on the finish that keeps this buoyant and lively. Good potential once in bottle.

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Beaumonts was the one cuvée that was difficult to assess when I visited in December. It appeared very reduced on the nose. The palate is underpinned by broody black fruit with noticeable salinity on the finish. However, there is a sense of this being a bit “muddled” at the moment and I will retaste on another occasion.

(the yield was 18 hectoliters per hectare, from 80-year-old vines in Cruots, Vignes Blanches, Treux and Clos Saint-Denis): Bright, dark red. Ripe but reduced aromas of dark raspberry and black cherry. Rich and densely packed, with a strong saline character contributing to a chewy texture. This broad, sweet, very long Echézeaux finishes with substantial tannic structure but no hardness.

About the Producer

Domaine Emmanuel Rouget, located in the village of Flagey-Echezeaux in the Cote de Nuits in Burgundy, France, was founded in 1985 and is a world-renowned winery. The history of Château Emmanuel Rouget can only be told by the famous winemaker Henri Jayer, the aunt of the owner Emmanuel Rouget. Already in the early 1980s, Henri was one of Burgundy's most legendary winemakers, influencing a younger generation of winemakers in Burgundy and indeed around the world. In 2001, Henri retired and Emmanuel took over all the vineyards under his name. Nicolas is responsible for the vineyards and Guillaume Rouget for the winery. Château Emmanuel Rouget is located in Vosne-Romanee, Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru and Echezeaux Grand Cru, as well as in the villages of Cote de Nuits and Côtes du Nuit. Villages and Savigny-les-Beaune in the Cote de Beaune. The most famous vineyard is Cros Parantoux, created by Henri. In 1970, Henri bought his last parcel of land from Cros Parantoux, bringing the total size of his parcel to 0.72 hectares. Today, Emma Laure inherits the complete 0.72 hectares of vineyards. In terms of viticulture, Château Emmanuel Rouge has always adhered to a philosophy of respect for nature, using organic methods of cultivation and eliminating the use of any pesticides or weed killers. Emma Laure has inherited the winemaking methods of her aunt Henri. For example, the grapes are destemmed and fermented in concrete fermenters, as Henri did, and the resulting wine is then matured in oak barrels for 20 months or more before being bottled. The wines produced at Château Emaraur Rouge range from Regional to Grand Cru, with Pinot Noir as the main grape, but also Chardonnay, Carmenere and Aligote to a lesser extent. Many of the Premier Cru wines are of Grand Cru quality and are often hard to find because of their small quantity and quality. The wines from the Premier Cru Baranto are often sold at Sotheby's.
