Aromas of peonies, exotic spices and rose petals mingled with notions of sweet wild berries and confit citrus introduce the 2020 Grands Échézeaux Grand Cru, a full-bodied, layered and muscular wine that's deep, concentrated and multidimensional, concluding with a long, resonant finish. Tasted from multiple barrels, it's clearly a worthy successor to the extraordinary 2019.

The 2020 Grands Échézeaux Grand Cru is a striking young wine, offering up aromas of mulberries and cassis mingled with orange zest, exotic spices and rose petals. Full-bodied, seamless and complete, with an immensely layered, fleshy palate, it concludes with a long, penetrating, saline finish. Such is its fruit concentration that its rich, powdery tannins are almost imperceptible. Over the last decade, the Grands-Échézeaux has tended to take a back seat to the Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Richebourg, but that certainly isn't the case in 2020.

The 2020 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru is stellar. It boasts tremendous aromatic presence and nervous energy. Blood orange, rose petal, lavender, chalk and dark red-toned fruit build effortlessly. There is a feeling of vibrancy to the Grands Echézeaux that is impossible to miss. Bright acids perk up the long, beautifully persistent finish. Readers will have to be patient with the 2020. It's a gorgeous wine in the making.

The 2020 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru was picked on 25 August at 33.5hL/ha. It is clearly a level up on the nose over its “kid brother” with more mineralité and terroir expression. With dark berry fruit, incense and a light sous-bois element, there is a sense of cohesion and refinement that is very alluring. The palate is medium-bodied with razor-sharp tannins. Symmetry from start to finish, it's spicier than the Echézeaux with a slightly confit finish. This feels very persistent and will age with aplomb. Gorgeous. 960 cases produced. Tasted at Corney & Barrow’s annual in bottle tasting in London.

The 2020 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru has a fresh, vibrant and more floral bouquet than the Echézeaux, but certainly darker fruit with a marine element emerging with time in the glass. The palate is taut and minerally, a little more tertiary than the Echézeaux with a hint of olive on it saline finish. A clear step up from the Echézeaux at the moment.

About the Producer

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or DRC is one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world with 25.5 hectares mostly in Vosne-Romanée on the route des Grands Crus in the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits of the Burgundy vineyards (named after the 1.8 hectare Clos de la Romanée-Conti, one of the most prestigious mythical grands crus in the world). The civil company of the same name was founded in 1942 by Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. It is now co-managed for their heir family by the winegrowers Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal.
