Tasting notes

Surprisingly paler than Echezeaux but the nose has far more weight and complexity: leather and black soot notes. Impressive depth on the palate with well-knit, quite toasty tannins. The fruit is black rather the red. It has a slightly dry, savory edge on the finish which is very long. A superb Grands Echezeaux. (926 cases produced) Tasted February 2003.

Tasted in Hong Kong. I have not tasted this since it was first released (and purchased a couple of bottles for my cellar.) It was a wise purchase. It has a truly wonderful bouquet with immense clarity and mineralite, still surprisingly youthful with notes of freshly tilled soil, granite, undergrowth and dark berries intermingling and full of energy. The palate is supremely well balanced with touches of black truffle and mushroom, fanning out nicely towards the silky-smooth finish that remains tense and vibrant. This wine illuminates the terroir. Tasted November 2011.

The Grands Echézeaux 2000 is a cerebral Burgundy, not quite as convincing as it was three years ago, but still a great wine. Here it has a vibrant red berry, stony bouquet that is reserved at first, but opens nicely with limestone and sea-spray scents emerging with time. It has a quite brilliant balance on the palate–not a powerful Grands Echézeaux but complex, with hints of black olive and chlorophyll emerging toward the finish that gently fans out and becomes a little spicier as it aerates. Superb.

About the Producer

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or DRC is one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world with 25.5 hectares mostly in Vosne-Romanée on the route des Grands Crus in the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits of the Burgundy vineyards (named after the 1.8 hectare Clos de la Romanée-Conti, one of the most prestigious mythical grands crus in the world). The civil company of the same name was founded in 1942 by Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. It is now co-managed for their heir family by the winegrowers Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal.
