The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne once again gives the Montrachet a run for its money. Aromatically penetrating and vibrant, the 2020 offers up a compelling mix of lemon peel, white flower, almond, white pepper and a host of bright, saline notes. The 2020 oozes class and precision from the very first taste. It's another wine I went back to many times over the course of this tasting. The 2020 is very clearly Corton-Charlemagne, but also very clearly a DRC white. In this vintage, the domaine used all four of its plots (spread across various locations on the Corton hill in the Le Charlemagne and En Charlemagne lieux-dits) and relied on slightly larger 300L barrels. In a word: magnificent!

The sophomore 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, from the 2.9 hectares in Le Charlemagne (Aloxe-Corton) and En Charlemagne (Pernand-Vergelesses) leased from Domaine Bonneau du Martray, was picked 7-9 September at 49.3hL/ha. It has killer delineation on the nose, possibly more so than the 2019 last year. Crushed stone percolates through the pressed white flowers and honeysuckle scents. Supremely focused. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, slightly creamy in texture, exactly what I want from a Corton-Charlemagne. With stem ginger and orange rind hints, lovely weight and length, this is quintessential Corton-Charlemagne. Superb. 1,530 cases produced. Tasted at Corney & Barrow's tasting in London.

The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has turned out beautifully, offering up aromas of crisp pear and green apple mingled with notions of hazelnuts, lime zest, white flowers, nutmeg and freshly baked bread. Full-bodied, satiny and concentrated, it's ample but incisive, with a vibrant spine of acidity and chalky structuring extract. Combining the depth and intensity of flavor of 2019 with supplemental cut and tension, it's a step up in quality from that excellent debut vintage.

About the Producer

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or DRC is one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world with 25.5 hectares mostly in Vosne-Romanée on the route des Grands Crus in the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits of the Burgundy vineyards (named after the 1.8 hectare Clos de la Romanée-Conti, one of the most prestigious mythical grands crus in the world). The civil company of the same name was founded in 1942 by Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. It is now co-managed for their heir family by the winegrowers Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal.
