Tasting notes

Just slightly overdone on the nose: blackberry, leather with a touch of cloves but still complex and engaging. The palate is medium-bodied with good fruit extraction, clean with good acidity cutting through bright blackcurrant and cassis fruits with a nice floral, elegant finish with a touch of chestnut. Good breeding. Very fine indeed. Tasted October 2007.

Cassis, vanilla, cherries, and lead pencil shavings all are present in this medium-bodied, opaque purple-colored wine, which has good vibrancy and refreshing acidity in a lively, classic style. It should drink well for 10-15 years.

"Excellent 2nd wine" I scribbled at en primeur. Then at the IMW tasting in November 2005. Bargain ahoy! Always reasonably priced and worth every penny/Euro/yen. An opulent nose of cassis, blackberry and a touch of iodine, the palate displays high extracted black, glycerin-rich fruit. Velvety smooth and quite New Worldy but sublime balance with a lovely blueberry and cassis finish.

Once again, proprietor Jean-Hubert Delon has produced one of the finest second wines of Bordeaux. The powerful, concentrated 2001 Clos de Marquis is not dissimilar from its bigger sibling. This dense purple-colored offering exhibits admirable purity, medium body, abundant quantities of sweet fruit, and ripe tannin. It should drink well between 2004-2015.

Shrewd consumers have been stocking up on Las Cases’s second wine for many years, and why not? The 2001 Clos du Marquis tastes like a classified growth Bordeaux. Deep ruby/purple-colored, it is more open-knit and forward than its bigger sibling, exhibiting lovely cassis fruit intermixed with underbrush, earth, and subtle background oak. Enjoy this approachable 2001 over the next 10-14 years. Not yet released
