Description
A wine with considerable ageing potential made in the traditional Médoc way, Château Clerc Milon is the result of a particularly successful marriage between gravel and clay-limestone terroirs and Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. Powerful, tannic, full-bodied and rich in fruit, it also has all the typical elegance of the finest Pauillac wines.

This flamboyant, dense, opaque purple-colored wine, made from a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot, is muscular, with an unctuous texture and high levels of tannin as well as extract. Compared to its other sibling in the Mouton-Rothschild stable, d'Armailhac, it is far more closed and tannic but still somewhat ostentatious, with smoky, leathery notes intermixed with oodles of black fruits and spice box. The wine may, however, have trouble eclipsing the brilliant 2001. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020.

A blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot, the millennial Clerc Milon has a slightly lactic, powdered chocolate-scented bouquet that suggests that there is slight dependence on the oak. With time in the glass there is a scent of cold black tea joining the fray. The palate is better with grainy, broad tannins, moderate acidity and a surprisingly autumnal leafiness towards the finish that suggests it is maturing quicker than expected. It is well balanced and harmonious, but it needs more flesh and vigour on the finish. Perhaps this has dipped in recent years? Drink now-2019. Tasted April 2013.

The full-bodied, concentrated, dense 2000 has muscle and fat to burn. Opaque ruby/purple-colored, with an unctuous texture, and notes of black cherry liqueur, cassis, smoke, leather, and licorice, this blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot displays noticeable tannin in the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020.

The nose is closed but seems quite subtle and elegant. A structured tannic palate but with great complexity. Pencil-lead notes. Classic Pauillac - superb. Tasted April 2001.

A beautiful wine and one of my favorites from this estate, this blend of nearly two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Merlot is aging impressively. Dense ruby/purple in color, with creme de cassis, charcoal, and sweet leathery and chocolatey notes intermixed with the classic Pauillac cedar and spice box, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy, with sweet tannin and a long finish. It seems to have inched into its window of full drinking maturity, and will stay there for 10-15+ years.

A massive Pauillac, the 2000 Clerc-Milon (a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot) displays zesty acidity, high tannin, and impressive levels of extract as well as richness. Its dense plum/purple color is followed by sweet aromas of smoke, coffee, blackberries, barbecue spices, and licorice. The attack is sweet, but then the tannin kicks in as does the wine's surprising acidity. Full, powerful, and long, it will require patience, atypical for Clerc-Milon. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025.

The 2000 Clerc Milon has a rustic, ferrous bouquet of sous-bois, cedar and tobacco scents and slightly faded fruit; touches of eucalyptus emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple opening and pliant tannins, though there is a touch of coarseness toward the finish. Modest in weight, this is an open-knit, old-school Pauillac that is just beginning to show a little dryness toward the tobacco-dominated finish. Drink this over the next 6–8 years.

Just starting to open now, with currant, tea leaf and berry character, along with a mineral undertone. Full body with firm tannins and a long finish. Another couple of years more of bottle age would be good, but why wait?

A legendary terroir, prestigious neighbours, a providential encounter: the history and the success of Château Clerc Milon are summed up in these three words. The terroir is that of Pauillac, where some of the world’s finest wines are made. The neighbours are Mouton and Lafite, illustrious First Growths whose nearby vines can be seen from the terrace of the Château. The encounter was with Baron Philippe, who in 1970 acquired the then badly neglected estate and decided to restore it to its status as a Classified Growth. Now, thanks to Baroness Philippine, Clerc Milon, one of the most highly regarded châteaux in the Bordeaux region, can boast technical facilities and reception areas worthy of its reputation.
