Description

A wine with considerable ageing potential made in the traditional Médoc way, Château Clerc Milon is the result of a particularly successful marriage between gravel and clay-limestone terroirs and Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. Powerful, tannic, full-bodied and rich in fruit, it also has all the typical elegance of the finest Pauillac wines.

Good depth. Nose seems closed but some nice liquorish/blackcurrant notes. Good depth on the palate with crushed berries, mint and cedar. Well-balanced with good acidity. Lush finish. Very fine. Drink over the next six years. Tasted September 2000.

This wine could turn out to be an outstanding effort if it is not too processed at bottling. It possesses an opaque purple color, as well as a gorgeously sweet nose of blackcurrants, spice, cedar, and roasted meats, an opulent texture, layers of fruit, surprising quantities of glycerin, and a medium to full-bodied, powerful finish. The tannin, new oak, and acidity are all well-integrated. This attractive wine should be at its best between 2002-2015.

The 1995 may turn out to be a sleeper, with its exotic, sweet, herb, blackcurrant, and smoky-scented nose. This low acid, plump, fleshy, medium-bodied, soft, well-endowed wine is already a lot of fun to consume. It should drink well for a dozen years. The Pomerol of Pauillac? This property has been producing opulent, fleshy, up-front wines that offer delicious drinking in spite of what appears to be a blatantly commercial style. All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux.

The 1995 Clerc-Milon, a 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc blend, reveals more tannin and grip than the 1996 (ironically, the 1995 has more of a 1996 vintage character, and vice versa for the 1996). This attractive dark ruby/purple-colored wine has impressive credentials, and may merit an outstanding score with another year or two in the bottle. It offers a gorgeous nose of roasted herbs, meats, cedar, cassis, spice, and vanillin. This dense, medium to full-bodied wine possesses outstanding levels of extract, plenty of glycerin, and a plush, layered, hedonistic finish. A luscious, complex wine, it reveals enough tannin and depth to warrant 15 or more years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2015. A sleeper.

Very good deep color. Aromatic oaky nose, with an iron scent. Tightly structured yet accessible; very Pauillac but with some green cabernet franc character. More intensely flavored than the '94, which is quite shallow in comparison. Oak-spicy aftertaste.

About the Producer

A legendary terroir, prestigious neighbours, a providential encounter: the history and the success of Château Clerc Milon are summed up in these three words. The terroir is that of Pauillac, where some of the world’s finest wines are made. The neighbours are Mouton and Lafite, illustrious First Growths whose nearby vines can be seen from the terrace of the Château. The encounter was with Baron Philippe, who in 1970 acquired the then badly neglected estate and decided to restore it to its status as a Classified Growth. Now, thanks to Baroness Philippine, Clerc Milon, one of the most highly regarded châteaux in the Bordeaux region, can boast technical facilities and reception areas worthy of its reputation.
