Dark red. Subdued, lightly herbal aromas of currant, blueberry, tobacco leaf, chocolate, menthol and shoe polish. Perfumed and penetrating, with a restrained sweetness and a slight herbal edge. Finishes youthfully dry, juicy and persistent. This very elegantly styled wine grew suppler with aeration, showing a flavor of bitter cherry and finish. Very Pauillac.

Bright medium ruby. Aromas of currant, blueberry, violet and licorice. Bright and focused, with modest flesh but lovely dark fruit flavors and grip. Lively acids extend the finish.

Slightly jammy on the nose with raspberry coulis, redcurrant and strawberry fruit. Lacks a little typicity. A sweet strawberry and cherry flavoured saturated palate that needs more acidity and definition. Just a little overdone. Tasted October 2007.

A blend primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon (around 50%) and Merlot (42%) with the balance Cabernet Franc, the 2001 Carruades shows the tell-tale lead pencil, ripe black currant, and cedary notes in a medium-bodied, pure, sweet, and accessible style. It should drink well during its first 10-12 years of life.

The elegant second wine, 2001 Carruades de Lafite reveals notions of lead pencil shavings intertwined with cherry, currant, cranberry, and wet stone-like aromas. Drink this medium-bodied, up-front Pauillac over the next decade.

Once again Lafite's second wine, the 2001 Carruades de Lafite, is an impeccably made effort. It is a blend of 50.4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22.2% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. It represents 42.5% of Lafite's harvest. The wine reveals excellent red and black currant characteristics intermixed with hints of new saddle leather, wood, and spice box. It possesses a sweeter, more developed personality than its bigger sibling, and fine length. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015.
