Tasting notes

I prefer the nose to the ’99 Carruades compared to the ’97. Good lift, fine definition, a greater sense of mineralite and vigour. Certainly more clarity although it is more austere than the 2002. The palate is medium-bodied, quite lithe, good acidity and lovely lifted black fruits with a touch of black plum and dates. This is an ebullient, quite vivacious Carruades, akin to a Saint Estephe on the earthy, austere finish. Very admirable for a ’99 Second wine. Drink now-2015. Tasted September 2008.

Nose just beginning to develop. Note of plum sauce. Structured with fine definition. Quite austere with black olives on the finish. Well-knit, accessible second wine and a superb Carruades. Tasted March 2000.

Made from 69% Cabernet Sauvignon and 31% Merlot, it is a seductive, sweet effort, with low acidity as well as a ripe style. Full and rich, this classic wine is made in the Lafite-Rothschild style. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

The 1999 Carruades de Lafite is made in the style of its bigger sibling. It reveals graphite, lead pencil, black currant, and cedary aromas, medium body, sweet glycerin, and a gorgeously expansive texture and palate. The wine is long and Lafite-like, and is unbelievably impressive. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2015.

Medium ruby-red. Rather oaky aromas of currant and graphite. Juicy, minerally and on the dry side, with notes of raw currant and woodsmoke. Seems a bit oaky, but finishes with good grip and acidity.

Good bright red-ruby. Dark aromas of cassis, blueberry, licorice, violet, mint and bitter chocolate, along with a faint note of candied berries. Tightly wound and quite juicy, with a strong mineral spine giving it a rather linear, lean impression. But classy and not at all hard, with lovely underlying fruit. Finishes firmly tannic and fresh. Not fat, but subtle and stylish.

About the Producer

Château Lafite Rothschild is a wine estate in the Pauillac region of the Médoc, producing one of the most sought-after and expensive red wines in the world. Lafite Rothschild is known for its perfume, elegance, finesse and harmony, in contrast to the more powerful Latour and Mouton Rothschild. Nevertheless, great vintages can age for 50 years or more. The precise blend of grand vin can vary depending on the vintage. It often contains between 80-95 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot making up much of the rest. In the winery, each plot of grapes is kept seperate for the fermentation to preserve their terroir and allow for maximum control at blending. The wine is aged for up to 20 months in new oak barrels.
