Tasting notes

Bottled in May 2024, the 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is showing brilliantly, wafting from the glass with notes of sweet stone and orchard fruit mingled with hints of nutmeg, iodine, freshly baked bread and vanilla pod. Full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it's deep and layered, with terrific mid-palate plenitude, lively acids and chalky structuring extract, this rivals the more incisive 2020 version as the finest wine from Bonneau du Martray in recent years.

The 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru marries textural intensity with a feeling of airiness that is palpable. Apricot, chamomile, mint, spice and a touch of vanillin all grace this exquisite white from Bonneau du Martray. Light tropical accents linger, adding further shades of intrigue. Blending from 5.5 hectares of vineyards spread across several locations on the Corton hill yields a wine of true distinction. The 2022 spent 12 months in 500-liter barrels (25% new) from four coopers and will complete its élevage with six months in tank. It is quite open and expressive today. - Antonio Galloni

The 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a heady, concentrated wine. Ample and exotic, with tremendous depth, the 2022 is seriously impressive right out of the gate. Candied citrus peel, mint, white pepper, graphite, tangerine oil and crushed rocks stain the palate. The 2022 has really come together over the last year and now shows all the potential I sensed when I first tasted it from barrel. I wouldn’t dream of touching a bottle anytime soon, as the 2022 is clearly built for the long haul. This wine was more open at the same time last year, but over the last 12 months, it has grown much deeper and more serious. The 2022 spent 12 months in French oak followed by six months in tank, cask and sandstone. Impressive.

About the Producer

Located in Pernand-Vergelesses in the Cote de Beaune region of France, Domaine Bonneau du Martray has a thousand-year-old vineyard and is the only Burgundy winery to produce only Grand Cru wines. The vineyards of Château Matelay currently cover over 11 hectares, of which 9.5 hectares are planted for the production of Chardonnay from Corten-Charlemagne, while the remaining area of the vineyard with more fertile soils is devoted to Pinot Noir, a Corten wine of steadily improving quality. The average age of the vines in the vineyard is 45 years. The owner, Joan Charles, has also introduced asexual propagation in the vineyard to replace the tired vines. Château Martlet produces only two wines, a white wine from the Corten-Charriman vineyard and a red wine from the Corten-Charriman vineyard. The white Chardonnay from the Corten-Charriman vineyard is a rich, thick wine with intense ripe fruit flavours, the best of all Chardonnay whites. The Colten Charlemagne white Chardonnay from Château Matelay is the best of the best. Fortunately, despite the excellent quality of the white wines produced here, they are affordable and offer excellent value for money. These wines are the result of the gift of nature meeting the perseverance of generations.
