The 2018 Rully 1er Cru Meix Cadot Vieilles Vignes is showing every bit as well as it did just after bottling a year ago, opening in the glass with notes of citrus zest, crisp orchard fruit, blanched almonds, iodine and fresh hazelnuts. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and open but precise, with bright acids and a long, saline finish. In profile, the more enveloping, giving 2018 makes for quite a contrast with the more tightly wound, concentrated 2019, but the two are quite close in ultimate quality despite their different styles. It was picked on September 2.
About the Producer
Following a long family tradition, Vincent Dureuil and his wife Céline took over the family estate in 1994. Since then, the couple have worked tirelessly to showcase the full potential of Rully's rich terroir and raise the profile of this historic appellation. The village of Rully is located at the northern end of the Côte Chalonnaise. Rully's premier vineyard sits on a south to southeast oriented slope of clay and limestone. The Domaine covers 20 hectares spread between the Côte Chalonnaise, Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. Most of the vines are over 50 to 75 years old. As with all top wineries, the magic begins in the vineyard. Young vines are pruned fairly late, bud removal is used to control yields, and the soil is tilled to ensure a healthy and aerated soil. Every year, when the perfect balance of sugar and acidity is found, all the grapes are picked by hand. Masterful winemaking, meticulous vineyard practices and old vines combine to produce wines of exceptional richness and complexity. Not surprisingly, both the red and white wines of this address are the first choice of many of Burgundy's top winegrowers.
