Description

Guidalberto marks the new millennium: the 2000 vintage appears on the market with less pretense than Sassicaia and with a more approachable drinkability, while showing a great aging potential. It is not intended to follow in the footsteps of Sassicaia, but rather be a wine that shows another expression of the Tenuta San Guido territory. The label depicts the Oratory of San Guido and the wine is named after the family ancestor Guidalberto della Gherardesca, an agricultural pioneer in the Bolgheri area. It was in the first decades of the 1800’s when he built the first factories, and churches, and planned the avenue of cypress trees, the Viale dei Cipressi. These trees were initially used to mark the boundaries between the different crops. Its ornamental value, with the tall cypresses running in double rows, came after that.

San Guido's 2012 Guidalberto is a bit lighter than most other recent vintages, but it shows lovely definition and purity in its flavors. Expressive floral notes meld into bright red berries and spices in a forward, supple Guidalberto to drink now and over the next few years. Guidalberto is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot.

Bright medium ruby. Crystallized blackberry, black cherry, cedar, spices and minerals on the slightly medicinal nose. Bright and supple, with lovely black fruit, oak and mineral flavors firmed by an edge of acidity. Lively, rather stylish wine with building, firm-edged tannins.

The 2012 Guidalberto (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) impresses for the approachable, yet intriguing, delivery of fruit. The style is fruit-forward and ripe, yet the wine is not banal. There’s a fluidity to the bouquet that brings it to cherry and blackberry with soft tones of leather and tobacco woven deep within. The mouthfeel is voluptuous and rich without feeling heavy or flat. The 2012 vintage shows good energy and verve, with a long flavor trail of chocolate and toasted espresso that leaves a favorable mark.

Aromas of blackberry and blueberry, with hints of wet earth and spices such as cloves. Full body with round, chewy tannins but polished and caressing. A juicy, succulent finish. One of the best ever. Drink or hold.
